  • Loading Moose in Argo 8x8

I see alot of videos on the web of guys hauling bull moose in the back of 8x8's. This is the primary reason I purchased this rig. Elk and moose hunting in Saskatchewan can be some pretty rugged terrain. My question is... How do you get that bull in the back of the machine? Brute force, winch, magic?? Any suggestions other than quartering?

Use a snatch block with your winch hang in a tree tie it off and just back under it.

Ditto i bought an argo (1970 two stroke 6x6 with one inch solid axels) for moose recovery in alaska. I was thinking that a trailer might be a better idea, the axles and body is 40 years old, and i would hate to tear something up. My thought was to use a trailer, (flat bed or other wise so long as it isn't too soupy). Flip the trailer over up side down on top of the moose (use a winch if im by my self). Use 2 ratchet straps to tie the trailer down to the moose and then flip it all over with either a cable or the winch so the tires are on the ground and the moose is on the trailer. love anyone's 2 cents on this. It is either that or building an "a frame" with the chain saw.

I think it is less work to quarter out the moose and then load it how you choose. Just MHO

You may be right akpride. I have no problems dismantling a moose on the spot if necessary. Would be neat to drive in and get the moose and then rip back to camp with the big skinning pole. Like you mentioned may be just as easy to quarter up and load. Makes for more relaxing once you get back to camp. Man I am pumped already. Been a long summer slugging away waiting for hunting holidays? Really like this site. You guys are a wealth of knowledge. If you like to hunt check out Saskatchewan Hunts. It is my ugly mug on the mainpage. It is an outdoor forum similar to this spectacur site. Hope I didn't break any rules by posting a website link??

Hi GreatWhite, I think your link will not work. I do believe you are missing a couple letters (an) in Saskatchewan. Great place to hunt. I enjoyed hunting deer and elk when I was stationed out there.

Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.

Hey Great white I thought it was you from Saskatchewanhunts congrats on the newer argo. I have loaded moose and elk in my argo useing a hand come along winch. It is hard to find a tree that will support a mooses total weight but it will work this way. I lift by the front legs first, you only have to lift about three feet back the argo in, once you get the front legs and head in. lift the by back legs and you set. I like to do it this way because it keeps the meat clean no muskeg juice. good luck and elk hunting is only 28 days away.

I have a 2000pd winch mounted on my ROPS. If there is snow on the ground I can pull the moose out, if not, I either quarter it and put it in the tub or use the winch to lift the moose up, and slowly pull it into the tub. I then use it to pull the moose back out. Its actually pretty easy. Here is a clip before I put my winch on.

Hey glad to see some Orange Army members. Thanks for the info. I will have to give it a try. After I get a moose that is....

Nice moose by the way. I am assuming you are from the territories?

Yep, Yellowknife. But that moose was from Peace River area. I try to go down every year to spend a week hunting with the family.

Here is another link to the Mackenzie mountain moose. We quartered this moose and put it in the tub. And we used the winch to load the quarters just because it was easier.

Very cool. I have actually watched that vid on youtube before. Some spectacular looking country side. Do the tires seem to get you where you need to go. Have been debating wheter to track the conquest or not.

derik- I have been watching those vids and those from rock dock, y'll were the ones who originally convince me to get an aatv rather than an atv. So far the ol argo never ceases to impress me . I packed out a moose with a terrible flu bug 2 years ago and decided that i would never shoot one again unless i could see a road or have mechanization. Enter argo... now if i can only get lucky enough to get a moose.... i will try a few methods of loading it and try for video.
