  • Well, I Bought One...

I am now the semi-reluctant (but still proud) owner of an argo.

Most of the readers here will think Im nuts for paying what I did for this but here in Oregon, aatvs are for some reason considered extremely rare and thus expensive, not to mention they are actually hard to find good deals on. anyways the machine:

    1977 Tecumseh model
    6 wheels (well, 5 actually)
    engine: 16hp wisconsin/robin single cylinder
13" plastic tracks in great shape
upper and lower tubs in good shape with no holes or cracks
one severly broken axle with no bearings present on axle
50+ feet of brand new in the box roller chain from daido (sp?)
tranny in good shape, shifts good
2500 lb superwinch with factory winch mount
almost unmolested, and with the exception of the bad axle, running gear looks to be in very good shape.

engine is out of it right now, and im working a deal on a primary clutch. I have a 16hp vangaurd with about 30ish hours on it that i will probably use instead of the robin
I paid 600 dollars for it

    what do you guys think?

You paid $600 for a Vanguard with only 30 hours on it? I'd say that's a pretty fair deal.

Wait... you paid $600 for the Argo?! I say you get a hold of the seller and get him the rest of the money you owe him.

Honestly, it sounds like a pretty good deal, especially if the tracks are in serviceable shape. I know very little about Argos (haven't owned one...yet.), but I know the question was just recently posed as to how much room there is in the earlier Argo models for a V-twin. I'm sure it can be done easily enough. Post some pictures of your new toy when you get a chance. Congratulations!

      to clarify:

I paid 600 for the argo/parts that came with it

I paid 20.00 (yes, twenty) for a toro greensmaster mower with an almost new 16hp vangaurd in it

and I will try to get pics up this weekend when I have some more time

I need the name, phone number, and address of the guy in desparate need of drugs you purchased that greensmaster from. A list of other items he still owns but forgot how to use due to obvious reasons and now needs to sell to obtain more obvious reasons would be of assistance but not required.
l like to buy stuff and no I don't do payments!

well, today at work I made 2 new 1.25" axles out of 4140, 2 new sprocket tubes, drilled all the pin holes in the mill, and welded the hub to the replacement axle. the other drilled axle blank will be a spare. This weekend I hope to have the vangaurd bolted up, a new throttle installed, and the new axle/bearings installed so it rolls on six wheels instead of 5. Im buying a primary clutch from a member soon, so I can be measuring for a belt soon as well. Also this weekend, I might be able to put all that purdy new chain on...that would be nice. Changing the tranny fluid is a must, as well.

couple questions: Im missing a wheel (5 bolt), is there anyplace local/inexpensive to get them?
also, my tires are fair, but i will be looking at replacing them, can I run the tracks with any stock size tire? I believe they are 20/11/8.
anyways, thats it for now, pics coming soon, hopefully

For a belt you can call the Max dealer or try this fellow:Quality Drive Systems

His name is Roy and he will help. This is what he does for a living. Great fellow!

Thanks for the Link, Lewis. Ill give him a shout when I get to that point. Is there a specific belt measuring procedure?

Measure the center to center distance of the clutches, and know what type of clutch you have or their measurements, Quality Drive Systems can look it up for you. They helped me on my Hustler rebuild.

Width and center to center clutch distance. There is also a different sizes in the T-20 clutch. Make sure you tell him what you want to use it for.

thanks much guys, I posted some pics in the gallery under argos, still cant figure out how to post them to threads. Just an old argo, mostly disassembled. got the vangaurd today, looking for an oil filter relocation kit thats inexpensive....hint, hint.
Also took out some of the axles, to get ready for new bearings, then its service the tranny, put all my shiny parts on, and see if it will run! maybe I can find the time next weekend, if the dictator I work for is ok with me having a whole 2 days in a row off.
