If you double click the "reply to thread" it automatically goes to advanced.

The manage attachment thing was a little tricky at first finding the right "buttons" to click. For me anyways. But play around with it and you'll get it.

OK, update: I got the other bad axle out (front left) and since its grooved badly where the outer bearing exploded, I'm taking it to work to repair it. My new bearings didn't come Saturday, so hopefully they will come Monday or Tuesday so I can get the drive-train going. wow, my wife just spell checked this whole thing....lost my train of thought....anyways, I also had to remove the engine/tranny plate, to access the inner front bearing flanges and such, so im servicing the tranny while its out. when I split the body, I noticed the body band wasnt in that great of shape, so angle iron, here I come! Also going to start work on the new seat frame, rear rack, roll bars/canvas top, and windshield frame. Hopefully those will be done this week, and ready for installation this weekend.

question: I understand that I need to relocate the oil filter on the 16hp vangaurd, can I do that myself, or is it more cost/time effective to order a "kit"? And where would I get one, aside from the obvious B&S website?

Will post updated pics when the machine looks updated shouldnt be long.....

well...youve got great tires, looks like. I think one or two of mine are currently holding air. I got my other axle repaired today, and started on the seat frame, but my bearings didnt come, so Im kinda stuck on the running gear till they do.

I recently put a relocation kit on my 21 HP Vanguard, but the kit is suppost to work for all V-twin Vannys. I ordered Briggs P/N 495244, which is the oil filter bracket; it just comes with the aluminum bracket and a couple of brass elbows. It was $72.32 from Tulsa Engine Warehouse. (That was the cheapest I could find it!!) I also ordered Briggs P/N 492687, which is the aluminum piece that you bolt where the oil filter mount was origionally on the engine. It was $44.91 from the same place. They offer a "kit" that includes hoses, but it's $130.00, and you still have to have the adapter piece. I just went to the local hardware/auto parts/whatever-you-need store and got some 3/8" oil resistant hose, some fittings and some clamps, and saved $60. I also bought a much larger oil cooler to mount up in a better ventilated area. I'll upload and post up some pictures of it tomorrow.

thanks stonewall. I think i might try to fire up the manual mill and make the engine block adaptor, and find a standard remote oil filter adaptor (like from a vw bug) and try making my own kit first...although the 110 bucks or so using tulsa is a much better alternative than going with the factory briggs part. If anybody sees a problem with using a larger capacity oil filter and adaptor, please let me know.

                Alright, Update time.

So...I tore/gently removed my front jackshafts and axles and shined them up, replaced bearings and reinstalled. Put the transmission and tranny mount back in, did the jackshaft/tranny alignment thing, and I finished my $8.50 oil filter relocation kit (sounds fancy), and started on my angle iron body band. Next on the list for this weekend, getting the engine in there, fuel lines plumbed, oil filter moved somewhere convenient, and bolt in my new seat frame. Im upgrading to dual 770 cca batteries, so I have to find room for them as well. I have a GM 80 amp, 1 wire alternator to install as well. I still need to get a wheel, as Im short one. After all that.....I can start doing some mods/add ons. stay tuned.......

well, not much progress today, just ordered some parts and got started on my rear rack, which will incorporate a diamond plate toolbox, 2 6 gallon jerry can mounts, and hopefully room for a cooler somewhere, but we will see.

not a bad idea to run some lube lines to your bearings while its apart.make a small manifold block at work fore the grease zerks. (point to point) saves a lot of headaches in the future.

well, I ordered my inner bearing flanges from Richards relics, (had to buy 4 because of the minimum purchase credit card thing) and he sent me the wrong ones. The ones I need are for a 1.25 axle, and he sent me 4 flanges for a 1 inch axle. So I call him, and tell him that he sent me the wrong parts....he promises to contact odg and get me the right ones asap....ok, sounds good. So I ask him what he wants me to do with the flanges I cant use (his mistake) and he says "Make paperweights out of em, or throw them away". So I reply "youre not going to take them back?" and he says no. Wow, gold star for customer service. I know that 4 flanges isnt a lot of money, but he could have at least exchanged them less shipping or something. Its not my fault they didnt check the outgoing parts. Anyways, now Im another week behind at least, and I will not be using him for any further purchases. Ok, Im all doing pissing and moaning now Somebody rip me a new one if anything Ive said sounds unfair

Everything you mentioned sounds right. Like stonewall said, this is typical of Richard Clark. Once he has your money he doesn't really care and you just get pushed off to the side. I'm sure he charged such an outrageous amount for your flanges plus the "handling" charges, that he's not losing any money at all by letting you keep the wrong ones. It's a hard lesson to learn, but just like the many other people that have been burned by Clark, now you know to avoid him and conduct business elsewhere. The situation you experienced is exactly why I tell people not to deal with him. I hope everything works out for you eventually and your project gets back up and going.

clevernickname, I have attempted a few small repairs on a couple of different aatvs . Not too successfully. It sounds like you removed axles ,worked on a body band and seat frame and more in the time I take to get the master link chain clip off.We all come to the table with different talents! ha ha. Thanks for your reports and updates.
