Would a pair of U joints work as well, instead of CV joints. I hear from mud bogging crowd that they are a bit mor suited to the exposure to elements then CV which can give up after water or dirt get into the boot

What degree angles would a whipper style springer be subjected to? I am not a trigonometric specialist, or really not a specialist in any type of math, but from whippers posts the suspension adds 9 inches to his width, and ther is 6 inches of travel in total. This means that there is 3 inches of travel from mid to either extreme. Using the tangent ratio, such that tanX = opposite/adjacent where X is the angle in degrees, and opposite is 9 and adjacent is 3. Therefore the angle is roughly 18.4 degrees.
I would agree that this angle is a lot to ask from a U joint. Considering the speed of 60 MPH the tire rotation must about 850 RPM.
I see some U joints from Princess Auto rated for 15 degree continuous at 1000 rpm. They are 30$ each
check my math, I might be off, not my forte

I agree with you LarryW, why change what is working. I was not suggesting that whipper should change his, but I was considering alternative methods to the same end, for people who want to build a similar rig, but can't get a hold of CV joints
