  • A basic question on AATV's - Drain Plugs

Just got an abandoned Muscateer and have posted some newbie questions on how to get it restored/running.

One issue in cleaning the vehicle we noticed was... no drain. Now as these are pretty outdoorsy items, and go thru wet often, and are made to float... why don't the vendors put in a drain (or maybe they do in others)?

We are thinking of adding one, similar to a boat bilge drain to allow washing out and drain. After pressure wahing the interior it was a PITA to get all the water and crud out.

The existing option of siphon/scoop seems an engineering/desing shortfall. Do others have removable drain plugs? Is adding one a bad idea?

Almost every amphib has drain plugs. They are usually located in the back of the machine just up from the bottom center of each chain channel. They are just hold drilled in the body the size of the caplugs that barely fit. A bilge pump is used as an emergency drain if you happen to take on too much water while swimming. It is a good idea to have one if you spend extended amounts of time in the water, but not a standard factory option on any machine I have owned.
l like to buy stuff and no I don't do payments!

Very cool! Thanks for the link. Here's another yellow Muscateer, but without the optional prop. Your machine is very nice and is a great candidate for a nice original restoration!

Difficulty is figuring out the best path forward. Very little info on these out there I can find, and unsure about the availability of the original Techumsen HH100 engine and if its a bit underpowered at 10Hp, as some have indicated.

Its going to be sitting for a while until we gat back tot he woods, so for the next few months its research and looking into options and gathering parts.

I have a Tecumseh HH120 that I'd be willing to sell (which is pretty much the same as the HH100 but it's a 12HP). The block has the same mounting holes as the HH100 so it would bolt right onto the stock Muscateer motor mounts without modification.

              Here's a pic:
