To answer the question how am I gonna use it I am wanting a fun trail machine that can carry two adults and two kids and fishing or hunting stuff in and out of creeks to shallow for flat bottom boats and just to play in the mud I think I will eventually want some tracks (steep sandy banks and deep sloppy mud) most of the time it will prolly only be me or two adults but who knows

Well the wiring issues is with the 18hp honda that was swapped in and I have now torn something up in the transmission gonna have to pull the motor and stand to remove the diamond shifters so I am thinking once the trans is fixed I may just leave the back seat out and add a kubota diesel I have had for a couple years its a 18hp diesel I read others had done this swap. Is there a build thread or pics at least of finished product I think somebody did a 3 cylinder 21hp maybe kinda like mine I think I can turn mine into at least a 28hp with a few mods my buddy has a header and turbo I think that will bolt on this is all big talk right now but it sounds good typing on this forum

I don't know of anybody that's put a Kubota engine into a Max IV yet (and documented it with pictures...), but you shouldn't have any problems if you're planning on putting it up high on the original engine stand. Aside from the engine cover, there's really not much to get in the way. I've transplanted a few of the Kubota gas engines (WG750) that have the same external dimensions as the Kubota D650, D722 etc. I think the 18hp unit is the D722...
The Kubotas weigh quite a bit (~140 pounds running) and that's quite a bit up high on that stand. If you REALLY want to fit one in, you might want to think about putting it down low, but this going to take quite a bit of fabrication (you can't fit the engine under the rear seat, so you'll have to slide the trans forward and put the engine where the tranny goes....) I don't think the Max IV is much narrower than the Hustler tubs, so it'll be a tight fit, but can be done.
...and here's Don's (D905?) in his 980.
Again, these are Hustlers, but it should give you and idea of how much room you have.Last edited by hydromike; 08-06-2013, 10:25 AM.sigpic

Does anybody know what he used for a driven clutch it may be factory or a long drive belt like that or how he mounted the clutch on the engine fly wheel? I was thinking of leaving the rear seat out and leaving the trans mounted where it is and moving the motor in front of it for better weight distribution plus I doubt the factory engine mounts or stand cod hd the kubota and radiator anyway

I think Don had Whipper machine him a stub shaft that bolts onto the flywheel out of a nickel-iron meteorite. I can't find the picture of it, though. Kubota actually supplied engines with 1-1/8" keyed stub shafts that bolt onto the flywheel for different applications. Here's a shot of a couple engines that had pulleys still bolted to the shafts when I picked them up.
I love the idea of putting the engine in nice and low in place of the back seat. Slide the front seat back a bit (I hate the seating position in the Max IVs) and it'll make downhills a lot more fun.sigpic
