  • Hello, I'm new here. I've been reading info for a couple of weeks and decided that I needed to join. I'm thinking of buying a used aatv and hoped I could get some help here, and perhaps help others in return in some way. I'm a duck hunter and recently acquired a new piece of marsh to hunt. We've been using quads to access the property but we get stuck a lot and I am looking for alternatives. Not sure what I should buy. Have some experience with 6X6 rigs from late 70s/early 80s, not fond memories! Looking for advice. Thanks in advance.

    • Hello marshrat, welcome to the forum. Depending on how bad your marsh is, you may want to look for an ATV with tracks. A good four stroke machine with lots of torque for some low-speed maneuvering would probably work best. Typically, the newer the model you can pick up, the better.

      • Our terrain is bad. I also need to carry a couple of people. I definitely want a machine with tracks. I've seen that there are different kinds of tracks (rubber, plastic, etc.). I'm not sure what to get. Most of the used machines that I see don't have tracks, so I will probably be looking to buy the tracks after I find a buggy. Are used tracks hard to find? Any track brands that I should stay away from? Also, I don't have much experience on forums so please forgive any mistakes. What thread should I post on for advice on atv brands without making members angry with questions about reliability, maintenance etc?

        • Hi Marshrat. You have to remember that every person and their budget is different so you will get lots of opinions. The best advise I can give is to find the machine that suits YOU the best. For sport riding, I prefer the Max machines because of the t-20 trans. If you are using it for utility/hauling/ people transport, the extra capacity of a 8 wheel Argo might be better for you. If you can afford a new Mudd-ox with the Kubota turbo diesel, well, that's even better

Post up where you live and maybe other local members will get you in on a group ride. That way you can check out and maybe even test drive the different machines.
Here is a map with a few members on it https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?m...z=3&dg=feature

You can learn more in a weekend of group riding than you can in a lifetime of reading forums. There are many tricks to getting through challenging terrain that really need to be experienced.

          • Thanks buggyman, that's the kind of info I need (sport machine vs utility). What is t-20 trans? I live in SE Texas near Beaumont. We hunt coastal marsh; tidal mud flats (salt water) and salt grass/cane. Our area is hard on equipment.

            • I think sand and salt water is about the worst environment you can get. It is going to eat bearings and all the metal parts.

Here is a couple videos that may help explain the difference between a t-20 (used in the Max machines) and an Argo trans.

Mudd-ox uses all hydraulic drive so it is instant variable speed forward to instant variable speed reverse. No shifting of gears.

For tracks, make sure you check out the Adairs. They swim where most tracks wont.

Pay little attention to the commentary and form your own opinions. My machine (tires only) travels fastest in the water by pulsing the throttle. A steady throttle spins the tires too fast and will actually make me go backwards. So should I put it in reverse and gun it? lol

                Hello all,
Well after about 30 years I've fallen hard back into the 6x6 scene. 3 weeks ago I picked up a pair of 6x6's in a local junk yard. A Hustler complete with Chaparral twin and aluminum (!) roll cage then a nice Argo missing it's engine and transmission ($100.00 for the pair). While looking for parts one of my students tells me his friend has an "Argo" in his barn that quit running I could buy for parts, only to find out its a great 1979 Attex 500 Super Chief that needed gas and a battery when I got it home. So needless to say here I am, neck deep in more projects.
I'm an Auto Collision and Restoration Instructor for high school and college students. I've been working on cars, motorcycles and atv's professionally for 30+ years and teaching for the last 10. One of my favorite "toys" I bought and fixed up in 1984 was a fiberglass 6x6 with a steering wheel and a seriously underpowered Briggs engine...I can't remember what brand it was, but damn it was fun.
