    • Hello Rednick, welcome to the forum. A Max IV is a good machine and it could probably assist in some of your mushroom hunts. Good luck in your search.

      • New MAX II Owner

Figured I should introduce myself. I have been browsing the site for a good month now. What a wealth of information. I am very new to the 6x6 scene and recently purchased a 1997 MAX II 16 HP B&S. To make a long story short--up until about a month and a half ago I really never knew these existed. That all changed when I made a road trip with my brother to pick up a MAX II out of Minnesota.
He had been looking for one for several years. I knew right then I had to have one.

So the daily search began using SearchTempest to check Craigslist within 300 miles of me. First week and a half nothing new came up. I was on vacation in California when I got a hit on a fresh post. I emailed the seller and asked if it was still available. He responded right away and said it was. We all know buying site unseen is not the best approach and does not always end well. I asked for more details and some video of the MAX running, going forward, backwards, turning left and right. He did and we made a deal for me to pick it up the 20th of December. So me and the brother made a road trip to get my MAX. You are never too old to have toys and I was really excited to get it.

The good-came with a windshield, front and rear racks, winch and a metal tub surround. Nothing really bad.

Got it home and drove it around the lot. It shifted fine but after a while started back firing and running real rough. I had to keep the choke pulled out to keep it form dying. There were a few other minor issues-broken windshield mount, missing body mount for the rear rack, the winch was never hooked up-no tethered switch or dash switch. Brake did not work.

So, like every new owner I got to work on it.

Thoroughly cleaned the tub-will do a better job in the spring
Milled a new body mount for the rear rack
        Fixed windshield mount
Changed out air filters which were both filthy
        Rebuilt carb
Replaced all fuel line and fuel filter
        Installed fuel shut off
        Installed new hour meter
Installed tethered and dash mounted switch for winch
Greased all bearings inside and out(checked axles for play)
        Adjusted and lubed chains
        Adjusted parking brake
        Installed LED rear lights
        Installed a horn
Added 12V power outlet and USB ports

Got all this done yesterday and took her out for another spin. She runs like a top. I need to get used to driving her but what a boatload of fun this is going to be. Me and my brother race on our jet skis--I am sure we will be doing some of that with these.

Things I still want to do--

        Install bilge pump
Install roll bar onto body surround
        Install soft top

I live right by Lake RedRock right north of Knoxville, IA. We have a lot of Army Corps land-not 100% sure what the rules are for Amphibious ATV's but I need to get her licensed with a DNR sticker and will register as a boat. That should keep them from bothering me.

There are not a ton of OHV parks in the State of Iowa. I know of one around Marshalltown, Okaloosa and Lake Rathbun.

Here are a couple of pics of my new toy.

Sorry for being so long winded. Look forward to participating and learning. Glad to be here.

        Steve-Iowa

        • Hi Steve, welcome to the forum. It sure didn't take you long to get involved, make a purchase and fix up the issues on your Max II. A Max II is such a fun machine to scoot around in. You should have loads of fun with it.

          • Thanks for the welcome Mike. I worked on it for over two weeks as I was in gathering parts mode but finished it up yesterday afternoon. Well, finished for now. Still a few things I want to do but I can see why folks like these things. They are addictive. As we say in the Datsun Roadster World "Enjoy the ride".

I really like the 6x6 vehicles, but unfortunately here in my country, we do not have access to this type of leisure.
For this reason, I am thinking about doing my own 6x6, I count on your help for that and hopefully be helpful if my reach.
Sorry an error, because I am using the translator to write because I do not speak English.

                  Hello all.
I'm a retired marine who is looking to purchase his first atv. I'm leaning towards the argo because of the drain plugs and bilge pump. I 've watched enough films of folks with both max, and argo atv's that splashed mud and water inside. In my research I never heard how the max removed water from the inside.I enjoy all the film's you all post and look forward to joining your fine community.

                  • Hey Miket74,

Drain plugs come standard on every aatv made today, and a bilge pump can be easily added to any machine. Pick up the kit from walmart plug it in and wire it up. Find one that fits you and your budget. we are here to help.. just ask away.

Hello miket74, welcome to the forum. Like Dan mentioned, the drain plugs and bilge pumps are available on both machines so don't let that alone sway your decision. Good luck in your search.

                      • Hello,
This is my first post in this forum. I Have been reading and researching this website for quite some time before I finally decided to get a max iv. I just bought a 1995 model that came with 20 hp kohler, tru-trax, roll cage, winch, heated throttle cable, and upgraded splined axles with only 59 hours on it. It also comes with a set of 26" titans when not using the tracks. We've got quite a bit of snow in Western Nebraska so the tracks will probably stay on. I've had all types of atv's from 3 wheelers to sport 4 wheelers to 4x4 Polaris sportsmans and rangers. This will be my second 6 wheeler as I bought a 1970's argo with a 440 chaparral about a year ago. It was helpless in the snow but crazy fast right up until the engine blew up. During my search for a replacement engine, I found someone that offered me pretty much what I paid for it, so I let them have that headache and decided to start fresh. I really enjoyed reading everybody's opinions on argo vs. max. I wouldn't be afraid to buy another argo (modern) but to me it came down to price and T20 tranny. All the extra add-ons that came with it were just the icing on the cake!

                          • doubleclutch78, welcome to the forum. Congratulations on picking up a Max IV. The upgraded splined axles are great to have. To me, that's the biggest advantage to the newer model IV's and it's one of the more expensive upgrades that you can make so you did well there.

iron pig, welcome to the website. I look forward to seeing you around.
