  • Hello every one my name is Steve and am new here. i have a problem and that's why i join this great sight. i became disabled in 2012 and can no longer get out on my propriety on my dirt bike with my grand kids or snow mobile. well here is my problem is i bought a scrambler from a guy a couple towns over. well i went to see it and drove it for about ten minuets around the guys yard. i was so excited because now i could get out of the wheel chair and spend time again with my grand kids on the trails. well i had him bring it to my home paid him 1700.00 dollars cash and off he went. well the motor died after 20 minuets after he left. so i have a friend who is pretty handy so i had it sent to his place for him to check it out. well turns out the motor will run for about 20 minuets then stops. turns out the compression is very low and so i need to rebuild motor get a new one. also the three wheels on the left side all turn but only one turns on the right. it appears that two of the splines are striped and the guy had put some bolts to jerry rig it. he said it was from the late sixtys early seventies. i could use some help to one find out where the serial numbers are located so i can get new splines. also where can i get new splines. secondly my friend can find a serial number on the motor to get parts to rebuild or can you get new motor for one that old. any help with these questions would be a great help please and thank you. sorry about this lousy story as a way to meet you all have a great day Steve.

    • Hi Steve, welcome to the forum. Try posting a wanted ad here in the classified section of the forum for the axles. Some member may have some they are willing to sell. If not, you may be able to get member "whipper-ag" to make some for you. You can also post a wanted ad for a motor or parts for your existing motor. Good luck in your rebuild.

      • Steve welcome to the sight I'm sure we could steer you in the right direction for parts or most other things. The best thing to do is start a new thread in the other atv sections, post a couple of pictures ( be it you or some one else with your computer) this gives us an idea of what you actually have. Showing the bad parts needed will get a quick answer and perhaps a response from someone who has good used parts for your machine, the engine number should be stamped on the engine shroud and if it is a Scrambler I believe they only used B&S 7 and 8hp and Tecumseh 12 and 16hp 4 stroke engines stock. Many people have been installing the Predator engines for cost factor.
        Early Scrambler axles had built in slip clutches that were later eliminated and drove direct, these are identified by the springs mounted on the axles at the sprockets.
        There are 2 manuals on the home page manual section of the Scrambler.

        Good luck and welcome again.

        My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
        Joe Camel never does that.

        Advice is free, it's the application that costs.

        • Hello everyone, glad to be a part of your little community, I finally got time to join after spending most of my time developing my own diesel-electric plug in hybrid AATV based on the MAX II and MAX IV vehicle platforms. I take old ones that have failed engines and transmissions and convert them to a diesel-electric hybrid that you can plug in to charge and then use the little diesel engine as a range extender. I also have a roof on top of the roll bars that I outfit with solar cells to charge the lithium-ion batteries so that the engine doesn't have to cut in as quickly when the charge gets low, and I have incorporated regeneration to charge the cells when you are going downhill, the electric motors act as generators and recharge the battery cells and save on braking at the same time. The other modification that I make is that I use toothed belts instead of chains to run the wheels, they are quieter than chains and don't need lubrication. I look forward to reading your threads and participating in your discussions of these unique vehicles. Thanks.

                  • Hello, Jim;

                    Welcome to the site. You're in good company up in western NY- lots of members in the area.

                    The Skipper was a Canadian machine and there isn't a whole lot of information on it that I know of. I've got a brochure that has a little information and some specifications for the machine. Here's a link http://www.6x6world.com/images/broch...ious-atv-2.jpg

                    Good luck with the project. Post some pictures when you can!

                              • Hi Kyle, welcome to the forum. Upload some photos of your machine to the gallery and someone can help you identify it. Once you get it identified, someone should be able to help point you in the right direction for parts.
