  • Hello all! My name is Randal, more known on a few automotive forums as TheSilverBuick, hence the screen name. I've been looking at MAX's for a few years but several folks have said to me I wouldn't like them due to being slow and lacking suspension so has kept me from spending any real money on getting one. But I ran across one locally for $700 and at that price point I had to get it and either get it out of my system or prove I like it enough to either modify it to my liking or buy a better one.

I'm pretty excited. I don't know yet the year or where to find the serial number. It has a Kohler 440(?) 2-stroke engine in it. I heard it run poorly, but the choke isn't hooked up, but it sounds/feels like it has good compression so hopefully just some carburetor work away from running good. The chains and sprockets seem to be in good repair as is the shifter and control lever linkages. I still have plenty to learn about it and look forward to getting out and driving it.

12 23hp motors for 120 each is a darn good buy in my book. Better grab a couple of those!!

                • Hi guys! I'm another Greg, and recently got an older MaxIV that was bought by the last owner from a military auction. It runs kinda rough- has a Vanguard 18hp which probably needs a tuneup. Also, the owners took it in salt water without drain plugs, and thus the controls were frozen up. The shop I bought it from did some work to get the left stick to work - you can see the plungers moving freely in and out of the T20, but you can tell the right stick barely moves. So I plan on hitting it on the outside up from with some penetrating oil (PB Blaster) and then some engine oil down inside the sticks - I was reading just regular engine oil, but the manual doesn't say what weight. Anyway, I look forward to getting it in good shape as we have 5 acres in San Diego's east county, where I'm going to use it a lot to haul materials and supplies down to our canyon where we're currently starting work on a full-size treehouse, as well as other work that I can see doing with it.
If there's something I should be or could be doing to get that stick working, or on the wrong path, I'd appreciate any advice!

                  Greg

                  • Hello another Greg! Congratulations on picking up a Max IV. I hope you get it working soon. For the stick, I would disconnect the linkage at the transmission itself to make sure that the lateral is the only thing stuck. This would rule out the issue being with the T20. You should then be able to spray penetrating oil to free it up or just remove the sticks and clean them up. They don't take long to pull out of the machine. Good luck with it.

Be sure the engines have a 1" straight crankshaft pto end.

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.

                      • Hi my name is Joshua. I'm from near Pittsburgh pa. I have been riding just about all my life I have recently been looking for a 6x6 so me and the family can enjoy the trails instead of sitting at home. My soon to be wife has a fear of driving from a little kid and will not operate anything with and engine for that matter. I recently found one I am interested in and thought this a good place for quality info.

                            • HI, I'm Rod from NE Ohio about 15 miles/25 minutes from a little place called Pine Lake. Maybe you've heard of it. I've always liked and wanted a 6x6 ever since the Banana Splits and going to the 6x6 races at Pine Lake. I finally have one and it is a 1999 Max II with a 16 HP B&S Vanguard with splined axles. What a blast! They are as much fun as I anticipated. I'm glad I found this site - what a treasure trove of info.
