I'm restoring a vintage hustler and I didn't measure the distance between the primary drive pulleys. Does it matter if there not in the same place?

The motor needs to be able to slide back and forth to adjust the proper tension on the drive belt.

Some Hustlers were manufactured without a provision for belt adjustment. Some of us built sliding mounts for the engine to remedy the situation.

Does it matter if [the pulleys are] not in the same place?
Sandman the answer is it does matter. If your pulleys are closer together, your belt will run loose and affect your low end torque and speed. This can be resolved by purchasing a shorter belt. If you are swapping engines, do take time to make an adjustable engine mount so you can fine tune belt tension. It is well worth the effort.
