  • Top Speeds

This afternoon, with a bit of boredom (and bad influence from Hydromike) I decided to check out the speeds of all the machines in our fleet.

From best to most pathetic they are:

The Racer: Attex ST-400 running a Bandolero engine. Estimated weight 400 LB (she's been on a diet) 41.9MPH (still a bit of stumble at around 6000 rpm. needs just a tick more jet)

Attex 295 Wild Wolf converted to an 18HP Vanguard. 2 stroke spring in the driven clutch. (Meanest bone stock 18 Vanguard I've ever seen) 27.5MPH

    Bone Stock 1997 Max II. 22" RH3 Tires. 18HP Vanguard. 23.59MPH

Hustler 980 Bigfoot on 27x12x12 tires. Stock 18 Opposed Twin Briggs. Get ready and hang onto your hat... 16.11MPH

Anyone else ever Test their machines?

I was able to get to 47 mph at Ashtabula at the end of the straight-away with the Apache...she had some left but I could not reach it before the turn. I'm thinking I can reach 50 if the track were longer and I can keep the "common sense" from getting in the way.

My bone stock 950 tops out around 21, but I never have messed with the clutches because I don't know anything about them. I'd like to get about 30-35 in it; any tips for higher top speed without a new higher rpm engine(and also without losing power...)?
          1983 Hustler 945-HK 627cc Vanguard
1982 GMC K-10 Sierra Classic Suburban 6.2 Diesel

          1974 Honda ATC 70

Nice numbers Racerone3! 41.9mph is pretty impressive! Even if its still not running right.

Both my 208tt and my trainer top out real close to 20mph. More like 18-19 range. Both machines are revving pretty bad at that and are geared slow. Its not really that big a deal until you try crossing a frozen lake. Driving on something that flat for any period of time seems to take forever, lol.

I really didn't care what the actual #'s were. I just wanted to compare our machines. All I've been driving lately is the Bigfoot and it didn't feel all that slow... till I did the tests. I did them in the order I listed them, so it was a gradual slow down from one machine to the next. The bigfoot felt really slow after running the others

You've got me beat. My Max II with the bandolero came in somewhere around 40.3 or 41.3 if I remember correctly. But that is with 25" tires. If I had 22" tires still on it, it would only reach 88% of that.

wfo, that is moving. What kind of RPM are you turning with the Hodge masterpiece?

Haven't got a place to open up the Crush to max it out unless i go to the drag strip .

Now you have me curious Race
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways , cigar in one hand, whiskey in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!!!"

There is a small opening at the end of the straightaway in the 1st turn, George. It'll take you into the woods, but it might be all the extra track you need. I'd pack a parachute though. Just to be safe.

The best I've done in my 18 HP Max IV is about 26 MPH.
The best I've done in the Rotax Max II is 42.5. It had more to go but I ran out of straight road.

I guess you better get off to the strip then. Not sure what class they would put you in, but it would be sweet to watch.

im not sure what rpm, no tach..seems to be at around 6500 to 7000..and at those speeds
you really have to keep those sticks steady..very hard to do and not wipeout
