  • Hustler - Well here we go!!

    Hi to all,

I am new to this site, been browsing for a few days now before and after the purchase of my first 6x6. First off I would like to say thank you for all the information that I have read and in advance for the help I will need to get this beast running again. It is a Hustler, could use a little help narrowing it down from there. It has a fiberglass upper and lower. Orange and Black in color and has a decal on the side that is a snake and says bushmaster, looks original not sure though. Seems to be missing a few things and had a few others added on. The guy was a tinkerer and didn't always put the right parts back onto it.

As you can see the gas tank is a two gallon can with a fuel line in it. The seat is from something. The original motor has been replaced with a Briggs & Stratton Vanguard 18hp. But one axle has been welded into the bearing with the sprocket welded to it as well. All of the bearings are two bolt agriculture bearings. Needing to find flanges to seal up the hull, don't know at this point if it would be better to replace all the axles with Argo or Max along with all of the bearings and flanges of either of those machines since they are easier to find. Thoughts?

In the process of getting the engine running again. Sat outside for the last few months, drained the oil it was old and black, replaced the gas as well. The air filter cover was an old coffee can that leaked. You could hear the water as you rotated the output shaft. Anyhoo working on getting it cleaned up and running again.

Well I was in need of a new project and the price was right (I guess), Any thoughts would be appreciated. Once I get the motor running I plan on removing all the unnecessary crap that has been added on. Then tackling the transmission, and seeing how the frame sits in the body.

Welcome to 6x6World! I remember seeing this machine for sale not that long ago on Craigslist somewhere down south if I remember correctly. First off, the Hustler is a great machine. You have a Hustler 880 model, which was one of the earlier ones. It originally came with most like a Canadian Curtis Wright 340cc twin cylinder 2 stroke engine or a Kohler K309 single cylinder 2 stroke engine (these were the very first engines used in the Hustler. It has a T-20 transmission, which are the best AATV transmissions out there and parts are still available through Recreatives. Amphibious Six-Wheel Drive All-Terrain Vehicles: MaxATVs - Call 1-800-255-2511 . I don't believe the snake decal is original though. Axle flanges are easily available and can be adapted from Max or other brands of AATVs depending on if your axles the earlier 1" diameter or 1 3/16" diameter.

Brochures on the Hustler line of amphibious ATVs manufactured by the Hustler Corporation.

You are correct it was for sale on CL in southwest Missouri near Branson. A few problems now, but have big plans in the head. Spent most of the first night sitting on the makeshift seat drinking beer and thinking.

Sitting and drinking beer while staring at six wheelers is great. If you have 1" axles I have a set of sprockets I got of trade from another member. PM me if you need them to fix the welded on sprocket you referred to. I only grabbed them because he needed something I had that I didn't need.
l like to buy stuff and no I don't do payments!

Good news got the motor running and the machine will go forwards and backwards, but that's it. No left or right. We started removing unnecessary parts and pieces from the frame trying to clean it up. Able to get the T-20 out and cracked it open to find nothing but water poured out. Now in the process of rebuilding the tranny with help of this site.
