  • There HAS to be a better alternative to the HEX collar set screws!

Hello all! So am I the only one who thinks this is a poor design? I am now in the process of cutting my (perfectly good) front left chain sprocket off with a air grinder due to these. I want to go with something (grade 8 or better) that sticks up a bit, and has a (male) square end similar to the brass plugs that block off extra ports in the intake of old SBC's. Is there a better part then this? The hex it uses it so small that you cant put much force on it and it is recessed so you cant cut a new notch for removal in the top of it either. I mean should I put the stock ones back in with anti-siez AND HOPE that parts are not walking around on the (splined) axels, or put thread locker (or rust!) on them and have to CUT off half the parts when it is time to service them? This is one of the VERY FEW design flaws I have found on these, someone else has to have noticed/fixed this issue by now. Do these things give yall such problems too? I would usually break out the ol' map gas and PB Blaster but I don't want to melt the tub...Thanks, Steve

If you are trying to get the set screws off your sprocket, they are put in with loctite. Apply a small amount of heat, and they will come right out. The factory usually put 2 set screws in them also, so don't be surprised when they won't come off after removing the first one.

As mentioned, a little Locktite to hold them in, and a little heat to get them out.
They are just a coarse thread, so you could put a stubby bolt in their place if you want.
I put a dimple in my axles where the setscrew sits, that way they don't have to be super tight.
