Sounds as if you'll have this covered, you could pick it up and spin things by hand than narrow it down chain at a time. I'm thinking the chains hitting the rivets in the adjusters from slider wear.

I think I might have figured it out. Need to take it apart to and double check. The plates that hold the bearings in place (cant remember what they are called at the moment for some reason) dont seem to crush against the bearing and I can actually move the axle in and out and see the bearing move in between the plates. And when I assembled these when I changed the bearing a few months back I noticed that I couldnt get that one to take grease at all....So i am going to change them plates and see if it will hold the bearings still and stop the popping as if the axle is walking and letting the chain ride up on the sprocket from misalignment.
