  • The Adventure Begins

    Hello Everyone,

I am a new member and this is my first post. I wanted to wait until I was an owner before I started asking (probably a lot) questions. I have read a lot of threads on the various forums here and I think I found what I wanted, but it's not in as good of shape as I would have liked. Today I bought a 1976 max IV. the tub and body are excellent for the age (first question: can they be painted?). After some checking I found it has a Rockwell 295 engine that the guy said ran great (question 2: how many Hp is it?) , the only problrm was he had pulled it out of the machine. He gave me a cup with some nuts, eye bolts and other small parts, but didn't let me know where they came from. He had pulled the transmission and talked to someone at Richards Relics about what he found and he said they told him the T-20 just needed adjusting, so the story goes on he put the transmission back in and stopped there, this is where I came in. I hope I got a good price ($900.00), we lifted the body and inspected the bottom side, clean with no gouges. The tires did not move in and out or have any play whatsoever, they are 21's. I will post pics in the next week or so, I'm on vacation and don't have a lot of time. I know the people hear are very helpful, and I'm sure I can have this yhing the way I want with your help, Like I said...the Adventure begins!

    Thanks Hillbiily63

This sounds like the red Max IV that was on the Columbus, OH Craigslist. First off, here's what not to do. Don't paint it. Paint won't stick to HDPE plastic, it'll just chip and flake right off. Don't deal with Richard's Relics. He's simply in this to make LOTS of money, many of his parts poor quality and overpriced, and his customer service is not very good. Many folks have been burned by him. The 295 JLO Rockwell is an engine out of an early Max II, not a Max IV. It's going to be very underpowered and isn't worth keeping in your machine. It's about 20HP give or take, but that's only around it's peak RPM range. Your best bet would be to swap a V twin 4 stroke like a Briggs Vanguard in your machine to make it a reliable performer. There are lots of folks on here that sell and trade parts and will help you out with a swap if you go that route. Good luck with it and welcome to the site!

Thanks for the reply and information on this engine. You're good...I was in Parkersburg, WV when I saw his ad on craigslist, I live in Raleigh , NC. There were some for sale down there but they all seemed a little pricey and they were not what I was really looking for. I wanted something to build myself so I didn't mind a little TLC, I just hope I didn't get a complete basket case. I liked to learn about, and fix the things I own. The guy said since I came so far he would give me a good price, besides now I had to buy a trailer as well. Like I said, I will get pics up asap I have some questions about the frame that's in this machine, looks modified. By the way, where can I get a good price on a gas tank?

      Thanks, Hillbilly
