  • Propeller for max IV

First off let me introduce myself. My names Sean and I just bought a 2000 Max IV. This is my first AATV. Real excited about it!

I have an idea to run two props out that back that are controlled by the drive system of the max. I want to install two small 90 degree gearboxes that are chain driven from the axle. So I'll need to add an extra gear on each side of the rear axle and run a chain to the gearboxs which would then be connected to the propellers.

I'm looking for some suggestions on how to engage and disengage the propellers so they're not spinning all the time with the wheels.

I think I should be able to find some gearboxes off of some junked lawn mowers that should do the trick nicely.

So the basic concept is steering the propellors would be the same as driving. Push left stick forward left prop spins. push right stick forward right prop spins.

Is this a good idea? Any Suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Sean

Ha...Muscateer had one built in from factory...buwa ha ha...just slightly ahead of it's time, they was..

I look forward to seeing how you accomplish this myself.

I'd suggest two 12V trolling motors to eliminate more seals that can be messed up by mud n such.

I was thinking that a cool way to do that would be to duct a couple of trolling motors and mount them on the sides kind of above/behind the rear tires then connect some sensors to the stick to run some motor speed controls. Of course I'm still working on getting my machine to run on land so its not going to get worked on anytime soon.

I did think of trolling motors. I made a mud motor out of a 86lb thrust trolling motor last year. I would really like to be able to drive the propellers with the same sticks as you drive the wheels. Would be a lot more convenient.

Those are both awesome ideas! I was kind of hoping I was going to be the first to apply this to my machine. I've been beaten by a couple of years! I sent out a message to the owner of the maximus asking for a list of parts and diagrams seeing as they have already accomplished this. Hopefully I get a reply back! Would save me some time and money trying to reinvent something that's already been invented!

seanno2, as plum crazy suggested one way would be to use a electromagnetic clutch,12 volt, on the shaft between the gearbox output shaft driving the prop. when ready to engage just push the button on your steering lever. another mechanical way that may work is to drive the gearbox from the axle to the input shaft of the gearbox with a belt instead of a chain. the belt is loose until you pull back on the steering lever. at that point a linkage rod would engage a idler pulley, which would tighten the belt engageing the gearbox. when let go, belt loosens. just like on the old style lawnmowers. the idler pulley would have a spring that pulled it back off the belt when you let go off the steering stick. only problem is it would engage on land too. johnboy va.

Or you could put swimming tires on it and a couple of paddles.

maybe the simplest way would be to use a worm gear off the back axle to drive the prop shaft. you would need guards around the props because they would be turning all the time unless a disconnect is installed. also my idea about the idler pulleys would work better by operating with foot pedals to engage the gearboxes. fun project anyway ! johnboy va.

two gear boxes off a riding mowers that have a nuetral would work. when you need the props, just shift into gear with a hand linkage.if the axle is not turning they will shift with no clutch. fun project anyway! johnboy va.

That's what I was thinking as well. Now I just need to find me some gearboxes and props. I like the idea of BWII and Maximus but those props are HUGE and close together. Don't know if i'll start the project anytime soon though. Maybe in a couple of months or next winter. My Wife is going to poop out a baby in August so we're trying to save some money! Hahaha... Don't think i'll be getting tracks this year either :-(

If you find an old Max II it will be already set up for dual props, although they never sold any that I am aware of. look at this thread.

Member Jessah just picked up 3 of the older II's with the prop drive bodies, I have 3 of the frames here as well. This one is pretty hurt.
