My question is do you have to take the linkage completely out to do this mod? Couldn't you weld your new lever on a shaft collar instead? I don't have a welder at home and the job wouldn't wouldn't appreciate bringing my max to work.

I just cut the stock shaft in half, welded a rod to it and cut a slot in the plastic.
