  • Kohler magnum 20

Can anyone tell me if the kohler magnum 20 will be a good motor in a 1998 max IV with 25 in tires. Sorry for the dumb questions but I'm very new to this.

Im curious about the 20hp kohler as well. Mine is a 1993 with the 20 on it. My engine is red in color though? My max should also be here in a week or so. How did you ship yours?

Mine isn't here yet, the guy I'm trading a quad to is bringing it in a pick up truck.

My old Max IV had a 18HP opposed Briggs and it worked quite well in the machine. You should be good with a 20 Kohler.

Thanks, I was worried that it might be underpowered after reading the posts. Evedryone seems to have 25hp and up.

Mogman and I were riding in my backyard trails, he has a 16 briggs, and 25" Rawhide III tires. While he does want more power in the future, it had no problems, despite the nasty conditions. (If you want to see a 16hp briggs powered, 25" tire, Max IV in action (with 2 adults on board), check the Putnam Pit Premier Ride under Trail rides thread, I have videos of both our machines running) I think the 20 will have no problems. Of course, more power is never a problem, untill you get to WAY too much power, then it's just enough

I have the 20hp Kohler Magnum in mine. With a hard tire like the Terra 26" I haul tail on the trial with my butt well off the seat, knees bent. You will smoke any 16hp on any decent dry terrain. 30mph on flat dry stuff and grass.

At a crawl (how I drive in the rough and off trail), I don't think there is much difference between the different hp of motors. I have seen a little wee briggs on another rider's old orange 8x8 argo with little bitty muck-donuts do anything on the trail, including mud wading.

If I bought a new engine, I would get an 18hp or 20hp Honda, if I was made out of money I would get one with efi. Kohler parts are really spendy, that's their main drawback in my opinion.
I ride a brown '96 Max 4 (skid plate, roll cage, 26" Rawhides, 20hp, custom winch and tow plates) with a 2K front winch and a 4K come-along for back up. I pack 20'tow-strap, 2 chains and 2 hooks,a jeep jack, and a big block of PT wood. Also an axe and chainsaw. And mechanic tools. I have a tote with a tarp and bungees. Spare parts. Two rifles. Hey, arent I supposed to be able to have three passengers?

                        AKTrail ,

I thinking seriously about buying an electric start , honda 24 , to replace the flat 18 briggs thats in the Hustler Big foot I just bought. The 20 hp Honda in boncrshr,s Hustler 950 pulls really well. He has the red spring clutch installed and also has 30 % lower gearing as well , so this helps I,m sure.

                          Kohler Magnum 20

My first Max IV had the Magnum 20 and it was a very powerful engine and moved out well. I would imagine you would be happy with it. Kinda heavy.

Your not too far from Allentown, right? I don't know the local roads on your end, but your probably about 3 hours most from me (2 1/2 to Allentown, give or take) I do hope to have at least a little Get-To-Gether / Trail ride sometime in the spring/early summer, but every attending machine MUST float, Theres miles of trails and rough roads on the hill, but you will spend quite a while in the water first to get to them
