Valve clearance is according to the cam grinder, so if Al said 10/12 that's fine. Stock briggs is 5. My Presision cam is also 5. But I have run it at 8 or so, and George runs his at 10/12 ish, as you can affect engine tune/cam profile/engine torque curve by changing valve clearance. I decided to run them tight for maximum quietness. It's a little softer down low, but sings at higher rpm. Stock starter is happier, too. Same thing on my 396 chevelle decades ago. More clearance, more low/midrange torque. Tighter, more top end.

Nice! Love the way those rockers look.
I thought that .010 sounded loose too, but that is where I run mine. No problems after 10 hours on the engine. Did not even need adjusting. I like the rocker arm bolts, they look a lot beefier that the ones I am running.

The cam that Al uses has plenty of duration; it might be hard to keep the unburned gas from spitting out the exhaust at idle. Curious to see how it turns out.

Wonder if you could run the valves loose, like 10 or 12 thou, to take some of the cam timing out of it. Buy a couple of stock main jets, and lean out the idle..

Or buy an old 14 hp and keep it around for ..

What's with the emission test anyway.. well it's tagged as a vehicle, but most states have offroad vehicles that run leaded gas, etc. What a pain.

Beautiful engine, though. Esp the exhaust The roller rockers are about $325 a set.

Those are pretty Is the emissions test based solely on the exhaust gases?

This is the setup I use on the racers. I can't stand slop in the laterals, and the U-channels connecting the plungers on the T-20s are one of the most embarrassing designs I've seen to date. I like to have a good feel for where the bands are engaging and disengaging when I'm out cruising around, and when you have to search and search for where they're engaging and disengaging, it makes for an unpleasant experience.

    Nice design Whipper...
