So I need to find some cold rolled grade 5 bolts? Does crAPA have them or do I need to hit up Grangers?I ride a brown '96 Max 4 (skid plate, roll cage, 26" Rawhides, 20hp, custom winch and tow plates) with a 2K front winch and a 4K come-along for back up. I pack 20'tow-strap, 2 chains and 2 hooks,a jeep jack, and a big block of PT wood. Also an axe and chainsaw. And mechanic tools. I have a tote with a tarp and bungees. Spare parts. Two rifles.Hey, arent I supposed to be able to have three passengers?

update-
I went thru the whole thing and decided that 1/2" play up or down was too much play for the rear axels. I tightened them up tighter than Dick's hatband and rode four hours in the mountains (rocks, mud, hills, everything). No problems. I am running grade 8 just because I still have some left over.
I guess the chains were too loose back there, seems to have fixed it.
Thanks everyone for the advice and help.Attached FilesI ride a brown '96 Max 4 (skid plate, roll cage, 26" Rawhides, 20hp, custom winch and tow plates) with a 2K front winch and a 4K come-along for back up. I think the bolt is supposed to break!
I sell bolts for a living. Bolts range in strength.
Yes you could put a grade 8 (US) Grade 10 metric bolt in every hole but ask yourself first " if the bolt didn't break what would have broken?" The right answer might be to carry spare bolts and laugh about how much money you are saving, not crying about how a 30 cent bolt caused $700 worth of damage.
If you have upgraded every part except the bolts maybe going from Grade 2 to grade 5 might be an answer. Grade 2 is the typical Home Depot bolt. Grade 5 & Grade 8 are in the slide bins at Home Depot.
Metric grade 4.6 = US grade 2
Metric grade 8.8 = grade 5 US
Metric grade 10 = Grade 8 US1970's Max II

I had a skid loader with a clutch bolt on the shaft that kept shearing off with the high grade 5 & 8 bolts. I installed standard bolt from Fleet Farm it never broke off again it but did bend a little. If it did happen to break you could drill it out if need be.
Looks like you got the problem solved but if not. You could always up grade to the new splined axles as recommended by RI. There is a reason they switched to the splined axles. Shearing off bolts could be one reason, sprockets do come off easier is another.
Bring extra bolts with as suggested. Good luck.

Of course I would rather break bolt than chain! It is just a pain to jack the motor, remove the clutch, and replace the one bolt you can't normally reach in the middle of the trail! The other five bolts are no sweat to replace, but since it is the back two that always break...
Splined axels, hmmm... I've seen them in instructionals here on 6x6world. They have snaprings and no bolts, so do they eat chains or did RI solve the problem althogether? Also, would they fit a '90s frame and tub?I ride a brown '96 Max 4 (skid plate, roll cage, 26" Rawhides, 20hp, custom winch and tow plates) with a 2K front winch and a 4K come-along for back up. Grab some know good grade 5's or 8's and try them. A fastener dealer can supply these. As the others are saying for every day use NAPA bolts are O.K.I wouldn't use them in my machines. In the past at our shop we had received some overseas bolt marked 5,8,10 and metric equivalent. They were not what they should have been, but they were cheaper!!!!
Just my 2 cents.Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways , cigar in one hand, whiskey in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!!!"

You might find that the bolt hole clearance may be worn oversize and the small amount of play will keep on smashing the bolts from now on. I had this problem with the drive on a bale wrapper. We went from a spring pin to a grade m10 bolt and kept on replacing broken bolts. The other wrapper ran well with the spring pin. Splined axels sound great.THE KIWI
