  • My new Max IV

I was going to have the guy post pics on this ad: http://www.6x6world.com/forums/ebay-...ianapolis.html

and he sent me pictures and a little info on it. After thinking it over and talking with him my curiosity killed me, I went and looked at it and bought it. It has a good running 16 hp briggs, pretty new tires and it came with the roll cage, windshield and everything intact.

The guy claimed that it wouldn't go into gear and thought it need a transmission. I took it home and pulled the shifters out and both have rounded pins and aren't broken off. So I put them back together and rocked it forward and it popped right into forward gear (the engine wasn't in though). It went right into reverse also so I am going to be hooking the motor back up on Saturday and seeing if I can get it going. Wish me luck, I hope that I got a good deal!

By the way, this means I have to sell my hustler project. I was looking for a motor to replace the Kohler 440 but that won't happen. If anyone wants or needs parts for a 900 hustler (i prefer to sell complete) I have one that the frame has been completely sanded and painted and new bearings on the frame. The transmission works fine and it leaks around the case seals. The Kohler runs but it runs lean so I assume it needs new seals. I'll put an ad up in a couple of weeks.

Anyhow here is Max, if you notice in the one picture I am pretending to drive with my year old son. He loves playing in these. Just wait until they go!

      Nate,

If you can I would keep the Hustler project just put it on the back burner. They are really cool machines and after the Max is fully relliable you will be looking for something else to tinker with.

Great find there Nate, everyone needs more that one. A Hustler is very nice looking machine.
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways , cigar in one hand, whiskey in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!!!"

IT'S ALIVE, thanks for the all the comments guys. I had to scream in celebration that the Max is back amongst the living. It is kinda chilly here (18F) but the 3 of us went for a few spins around the neighborhood. It popped right into forward and reverse with a little rocking but nothing like the previous owner said he had with the transmission grinding. I stalled it a few times and the starter stopped working. I need to figure out if it's the solenoid or the starter. Any suggestions on trouble shooting that? I did figure out the wires on the engine and we are in business!

              Nice find.

I would start by making sure all of the connections are clean clean clean. It doesn't take much for voltage to pass through, but when it comes to the high amperage required to turn the motor over......... Well alot of times a "click & then nothing" is just a poor connection that looks fine at first glance but once you take 'em apart & sand everything down you realize how oxidated it is.
