  • Just bought my second Max IV tonight and...

    It's in good shape, runs well EXCEPT while the seller had it on the market his son continued to use it. The T20 clutch bolt came loose when he was riding it and the keyway is also missing. It must have spun on it's shaft a bit because after I tighten the bolt back up there is a little bit of play...

    So I guess I should replace the clutch ? I assume the engine and trans has to come out, but it doesn't look very hard to do. Where's the best place to buy the clutch ?

    Is there supposed to be some kind of thread locker Loktite, etc) on the bolt threads ?

    Any tips from anyone who had encountered this ? I haven't yet tried just replacing the key way and tightening the bolt...I'm hoping just the bolt came loose allowing the keyway to pop out. The guy reduced the price several hundred because of this.

    Also need a new ignition switch...is this a universal type or is it an OE part only ?

    hi there Badmoonrising;
    i'm not aware of the nessesity to "loc tight" the clutch , but i do know from expeirience that you "must" loc tight the trani mounting bolts when you go to put the trani back in

        Are you sure it's the clutch moving on the shaft and not the whole shaft moving in & out? It seems like it would be a bad idea to thread-lock the bolt in if you're going to be the one who takes it off next time. I'd get a new key, clean up the shaft and inside surface of the clutch and tighten it up. There shouldn't be any problems as long as there hasn't been damage to the shaft or inside diameter of the clutch.

          I put a new key in and tightened it up. Clutch went back on fine but there's slight bit of "wobble" as if the pulley is bent. I'll take a closer look tomorrow see what exactly is out of whack, the shaft looked fine. I was able to drive it off the trailer and into my garage afterwards. I also need a new ignition switch...any sources for that ?

            I'm going to go ahead and replace the clutch. Is the input shaft shaft 7/8" ?

              Ok after taking it out several times the bolt is staying tight, no problems at all. The clutch has what looks like a slight imbalance at idle speed but as soon as I give it gas, it appears normal...no imbalance, wobbling, vibration. Is this normal with the clutches ?

                That's not an uncommon thing to have happen with an older clutch. It doesn't sound bad enough to be an issue. I would run it like it is.

                  Still going, been riding the hell out of it and everything is fine, the bolt hasn't loosened up at all.

                    When at idle my Max IV's secondary clutch seem to have a slight wobble to that disappears as soon as the throttle is applied. It has been that way for years.
