  • Boy did I ever score!!!

After 5 days of pins and needles.. I met up with the guy that owned the 2002 MaxII .. we made a trade for an RC Helicoper of mine and $700 cash.... lets just say I did good... anyway this max is like new.. The owner prior to him was drill happy and had mounted a roll cage and windsheild made of 1/2'' conduit.. and screwed a plate on both sides for his Ca. boating license... The gas was sludge in the carb.. so that was cleaned...and the oil and filter was changed... this is a far cry from the power of the Attex Supercheif.. but this thing drives like a cadillac..
I still have to change the tranny fluid and adjust the chains .. then were all set! I will post pictures tomorrow.. any advise on how to adjust the chain tensioners? I looks pretty cut and dry but I'm at a loss as to how they loosen up... I'm not so sure of the spring loaded Latterals as of of yet... Way differant from the Attex ones..

First off, that's an amazing deal! Very nice! The first thing I would do is take the springs off of the laterals.......it makes driving so much better in my opinion. Now as far as the chain tensioners go, they're a poor design, and once they start letting go and not staying tight, they're pretty much done. They have very fine teeth that they click and ratchet into and once those teeth and/or the channels wear they're pretty much done for it. If they are misaligned with the chains, they will go bad very quickly, so make sure they're lined up perfectly. I think your best bet would be to either get some new ones, or maybe figure out a way to redesign them. But if you want to just get back on the trails, just order some up from RI and go (after you change the transmission fluid and check the machine over of course). Sweet deal!
Just to add to Jp on the tensioners, you manually push them tight and they should stay there. To loosen you need to cock them sideways to release the teeth.

It has no roll bar... How do they attach ? My buddy owns a muffler shop with metal bending skills so he could make one .. I see the factory one goes through the top of the tub...a couple things come to mind... how do you then raise the lid? How is the roll bar secured? Thanks Guys!!

The roll bar is connected to the top and when it sits down it fits on some pins. You can remove the seat to access the pins to remove or install the clips. I made a picture to show the pins.

The roll bar bolts behind the seat on the steel plate and the pins are for line up of the upper body and pin the the steel plate to the frame . The steel plate holds the seat belts and roll bar to the top .

Here it is.. I had the Zipper tires ($300) including the tires I'm in it $1750 .... considering what a used gas Heli goes for on ebay..(I even through in the flight Simulator and encouraged to him to do his homework) .. we were both like little kids at Christmas!.. I have some automotive seam sealer about the same body color to put in them 9000 holes.. I removed the springs.. MUCH better!!! Greased it all up... and we're rollin!

You really got a great deal on that Max! If you want a little more power for a small amount of money, you can get a 16HP Vanguard carburetor off ebay and it will bolt right up. The only difference between the 14 and 16HP Vanguards is the carburetor, they're both have a 480cc displacement. Just make sure the carburetor that you are buying has the fuel solenoid in it. The older Vanguard motors didn't come with the solenoid.

I couldn't sleep! I just knew someone was going to see the Craigslist add and tell him he's nuts or his friends talk him out of it..!! He had it listed as a "MAXX2-6X6" so I was sure it wouldn't be seen by many.. it wouldn't show up easiley on "SearchTempest" which is what i use to search multiple Craigslists at one time... I was on the hunt for a Max for the last 3 weeks.. I spotted this Monday at 7:05 and he posted it at 6:55 and had to wait all week before I could go get it..

Very good deal, I'd say. Reminds me of the SS before his transformation.. right down to the 14 hp. Only mine is a 2000. I still wanted some kind of springs on my laterals, so Whipper put lighter springs on mine recently. Having the springs on helps me to not end up in a bush when I have to shoo a bug or put on my makeup while driving. (Just kidding about the makeup).

We're taking this thing to the sand dunes next weekend. I figure my daughter inlaw and wife can cruise it out to the the base of the hill we all race at.. She has never drove one and will not be traversing any hills... I think I'm gonna reinstall the springs on the laterals as it should make driving much easier for a newbie... I will however give her a few lessons on driving before we head up there... This machine is much more tamer than the Superchief .... That thing was an animal!
