The day I bought it I went to the Dept of Motor vehicles to get it in my name ( California titles these things). the original owners sold it to a guy in Nevada in 2006 , he sold it to yet another guy, and then to another... Then I got it...and brought it back to Cali. So there I was waiting in line for 3 hours only to be told I had to contact all the above parties and have them fill out a statement if facts stating when they had it and what they did with it..
Well I contacted the original owners, they gave me what I needed and gave me the next guy he was cool and we side stepped the rest... So back to DMV and another 3 hrs. Got to the counter told her how pretty she was and $351 later I had a title! They taxed me on $2600 and I got to pay back fees to 2007... I couldve saved 50 bux if I made one more trip but I said screw it!
So I'm into my max $2100 so far including new tires. These machines are a bit harder to come by out here so I feel I still did very well...
I love California !!!

I know how you feel, New York is just as bad. I was just about to buy a Honda XR250 dirtbike/enduro and try to have it registerested for the street, but after all of the crap they want me to go through, I'm unfortunately going to have to scrap that plan. But $2100 for your Max is a really good deal still. Glad to hear you've got everything squared away.

next time, just remove the registration plate from the vehicle, go to dmv and tell them you have owned it for 10- 15 years and can't find the title or original paperwork.. and just request a new tiltle for it... or tell them its home made and u need a vin number for it...
I had more of a problem getting Li'l Truck insured than registered. I honestly think it depends on who you get at DMV and what mood they're in.
I had no problem getting the Truck or the Apache registered. Since I had no title for either, they told me I'd only get a non-transferable registration until the state could determine that my machine was never reported stolen. I have my transferable reggie for the springer and should get one for the truck in a few weeks.
It sucked... I had the machine and the title from the original owners when they sold it in 2006... the next few short time owners never put it in their names... (and in Nevada which is where the max was from '06-'10 they need not be tagged for off road use)... but the more names that are brought in the more statement sheets they want... but it's worth it in the end..
