MaxII Bigfoot/Tall tub

My seat "sits" in place, but there is nothing to lock it down yet.....That is my goal for tomorrow. Once the seat is solid, I will decide for sure, but my guess is I will add about 3" to the sticks. I didn't really think about angling them backwards....I did think of making a "T" at the top, but that creates issues with floor pan removal.

Jim, I like the layout and location of your shifters. Nice work. To switch topics slightly, what are your plans for the laterals? Are you going to extend them or bend them towards the rear of the Max any to compensate for your new seat position? Mine are stock in my Max II and even with the stock bench seat, they seem to need lengthening to keep me from having to lean forward while driving it. I just imagine you are facing that same issue to a greater extent with your new seat or maybe it just looks like it sits further back than it does?

What are the handle-ends made from? They almost look like small prybar handles. I used Sears Suburban garden tractor shift knobs.

Harbor freight "free" screwdrivers, drilled and tapped to 1/2-20.....I did space them so the handles could be replaced with stock handles from a maxII. I only had one, but next time I order from RI, I will get another.

Wow, you were right. You didn't have a lot of room to work in there. Great job at maximizing utility in a minimum of space! Now I feel lucky with how much room I had in the Swamp Fox to build my spartan mechanism. What are the handle-ends made from? They almost look like small prybar handles. ...yes, the parts are a little crude, but I don't have a machine shop in the garage....just a 4" angle grinder and a mig welder.

Split shift mechanism

It seems like it took forever......actually was a couple of days to design and build. But it does work well and I'm happy with it. The challenge was to have the 2 levers pivot on the same plane so the handles would stay parallel and equal.
Having too much stuff in the way didn't help either.

A MaxII has an axle spacing of 25" center to center. I stretched the frame an extra 1 1/4" between axles. This allows the use of true 25" dia. tires or even 26" tires if I wanted. I also raised the tub 3" to eliminate tub to tire issues. My goal was for 25" tires with Adair tracks. [/QUOTE]

I think the blue wheels tuned out nice. It's crazy how much clearance you have now. I can't wait to see the motor in action.

The silver wheel actually looked the best, and the flat black would have been the most practical..... but I decided on blue. The silver/chrome would have been non stop cleaning and paint touch ups I'm sure.


The project seems like it is progressing slow....very slowly. I spent most of the day today trying to make the splitshifter with both handles on the left side of the seat. It sounds easy enough, but I didn't want to cross the mechanism. I wanted the handle on the left to operate the LH side, and the same with the right handle/side.

And the best part of the whole machine.... The beverage holder.

You could paint those rims pink with purple dots and that would still be one of the baddest machines in the woods. Go with whatever and change it later just because, thats my vote.

Flat black Jim looks great.......but Chrome would be better but not practical...........so flat black is the better look. Great job Jim and hope to see it at one of the rides.
