Up steep inclines the factory fuel pump won't keep up. Look at some o the threads about
Electric fuel pump upgrades. Many of us have had to do so

Not familiar with vanguard carbs, but some small engine carbs to clean properly you have to drill something inside, iknow its not much help but hooefully someone else will chime in that knows

On a MaxII up a steep hill, no fuel pump would be needed. Your tank is in the front and gravity would do all the work. Argo's have the tank under the seat with the engine forward....fuel pump must work against gravity on those machines, and thats alot to ask of a simple pulse type pump.

Try opening the low speed screw 1/2 turn more and see if the idle speed increases.....if yes turn down the idle screw setting and drive it . It could be running lean.
What do the plugs look like after its been idling.

                  Try reading this manual.
Some bs carbs have fixed jets and cannot be adjusted.
The governor could be out of adjustment and would limit the rpm range.

Sounds like it could be one of the clutches stuck from sitting so long. It's probably just a matter of taking them apart, cleaning and lubricating the moving pieces. Good luck!

The way you describe it as eventually upshift but then it dont downshift it sounds like the driven pulley on the t-20 is the issue.

guys having hard time with my max it loses all power when i go to climb a hill re did carb cleand all gas lines plus gas tank revs fine when iam driveing it and get to incline it just loses its power dont no if its the clutch or if my trans is bad having hard time figuring it out....
