    haha wish I was. I spoke to Richard at Richard's Relics. They're like 20 minutes from my house. He's got the output shaft (apparently just the sprocket replacement doesn't work very well) and the ignition switch that I need and I'll have them in time to hopefully get this thing rolling by the end of the weekend. I'm thinking my Max needs bigger wheels and tires soon also...............

      Apparent to whom? The sprocket replacement (if you just *NEED* to replace the sprocket) is the way to go about it. Why pay for the entire output shaft if it's just the sprocket that needs to be replaced? It's a rhetorical question; I know why he's selling you the entire shaft. It's a simple press-on/press-off operation, and a substantially cheaper approach versus replacing the entire shaft.

      Don't throw your old shaft out regardless of the condition of the sprocket. There are lots of folks that could use it some day....

        Well all I know is........ My sprocket is broken off of the shaft. He told me that in order to properly get the sprocket to stay on the shaft, something about you have to heat up the shaft to get it to expand and then place the sprocket on it. As the shaft cools, the two pieces kind of become one or something of that nature. He said that if I just press the sprocket on the shaft then it'll likely fall off.

          Ended up ordering the Sprocket and Ignition switch from the Factory.
          They suggested placing 3 or so welds on the sprocket/shaft about 3/4 of an inch to insure that it stays after pressing the sprocket on.

            Glad you got the part from Jay.......Richard Clark is full of $***. The sprockets have hardened teeth, not hard arbors. The output shaft IS hard.....all you need is a simple $10 generic sprocket(maybe $15 depending on where you buy), and a lathe. You turn out the center of the sprocket until it is almost as big as the shaft. then use a press to put them together......very simple. The hardened output shaft will cut the serrations (splines) into the sprocket. and a spot or two of weld guarantees they won't separate. Just make sure you don't press it on all the way...the chain will hit the case. I know, I did that once.

            Bashing Richard....I kindof sound like JP. LOL I normally wont do that, but he did lie to you, and that is just not right. He is in business to make money, apparently alot on each sale, but I won't bash him for that. Lying is a whole other issue.

              Congrats on the best kind of find -free- and welcome to the forums! Not a bad looking Max especially for FREE!! Now about installing your sprocket, Chill the shaft to shrink it, an hour or so in a freezer will do it. Once you are ready to drop it on, heat the new sprocket to 300 to 400 degrees to expand it and install. You might not even have to press it on. Once both pieces reach the same temp after the install, they will be seized beyond belief. Then add the welds and you'll be tearing something else up before those parts come apart! Good luck with your new toy.

                Thanks guys I appreciate the advise, it really is great!
                I'm hoping to take the trans out on Saturday or Sunday and have it apart waiting for install of the new parts.
                My mother in law seems to think that it was about to get scrapped because something was wrong with the motor or something but I assume it was the ignition not working from the key being broken inside of it.
                So once the sprocket and ignition are in it I guess we'll see where we stand.
                The tires show some dry rott so I'm hoping that I don't want to have to replace them right off the bat.
                I plan to eventually get bigger wheels and tires but was hoping to get use to it first, we'll see.

                Anything else I should check before putting this back together and trying to drive?

                  Be sure you use atf - 24oz and 8oz gm limited slip additive to refill your transmission when you get it back together, NEVER put gear oil in a t-20, unless of course you have a burning desire to install new bands.

                    So it's been a while since I posted. My new ignition and sprocket came in last week but I didn't get to work on the max much because of a business trip. So I put the ignition in, and turned the key (fresh battery) to see if the max would even start before I spent the time putting the new tranny sprocket on. When I turn the key, the brake lights come on but the solenoid just clicks. I assume the solenoid is bad. I'm talking about the solenoid between the battery and the starter. It's got 2 positive terminals and 2 Male ground plugs for connectors. There's a red wire (I assume headlights) on the terminal with the wire directly from the battery, then the other red wire runs to the starter (3 red wires total). Then there are 2 grounds on the solenoid, one goes to a bolt holding the solenoid onto the engine stand. Another Goes up to a plastic plug towards the top of the motor. Then there's one grounded onto the engine stand with the other on the bolt.

                    I went to Autozone, got a new solenoid with 2 terminals for the power wires but it's only got 1 male ground terminal. Hooked up the 3 red as they're supposed to. Then I hooked up the ground wires as best as I knew how. Now when I turn the key, rather than trying to start, the voltmeter pulls all the way negative.

                    Anybody know if I have to use the specific solenoid that the max came with (order one), Do i have to have one with 2 male ground terminals, or can I use the one that I've got, just wire if differently? As always, I appreciate any and all help!
