  • Another Trackster Build

Well I don’t have nearly as much progress as some of the other Trackster guys on here but I am plugging away and I thought one way to keep up some momentum is to post up my project.

A little background; I saw my first trackster ~20 years ago, there is a local guy that has one that was used for trail grooming and for installation of power lines (he was a supervisor that would use it to get to job sites). I always thought they were cool then I was in the pipeline business and saw a lot of different tracked machines. I was starting to scratch design one (I’m an engineer that had a lot of time at that point) but then I saw this basket case and figured it would be a better start than nothing. Maybe I was wrong about that!!!

So I brought this home, motor didn’t run, tracks are a wreck, body is so so, seat destroyed, dash destroyed, budget is minimal.

So far I have removed motor, made a new motor mount, bought a Honda GX670, designed a drive system to transfer power from a horizontal motor to a trans that is mounted at 13 deg from horizontal, built the parts and now am ready to try to assemble.

Once I get the motor hooked up I would like to do a brief test (read thrash in the woods) before I disassemble again for paint, rebuild suspension and replace tracks.

I hope you guys find it interesting. I expect this to take a looooonnnnnnnggggg time.

    Nick

Nick, that sounds like a neat project. Do you have any pictures that you can share? I would like to see the work you did to the drivetrain.

I posted them wrong the first time. They are there now. I still need to model the belts and taper lock bushings, I will update the prints after I do.

Any thing new Nick? I am back to work on mine, in the process of building something to help build something for it if that makes sense. I found all the cheesy flex plates broken so I'm converting over to a driveshaft. Also found out the engine is off a generator or something and has the dreaded tapered shaft, so I'll be adapting the hub to work with a 1" keyed shaft and attaching a pulley to drive a car alternator. Gonna be doing a good bit of night hog hunting and will need the extra voltage for lighting and such. It will go to be sprayed in the next few days, so things are progressing again. Keep up the good work!

I am ok, progress is a little slow because the engineer messed up and missed a 0 in the tolerance. Big diffence between .006" and .0006" when it comes to bearing fits. As an awesome bonus once the sleeves were shrunk on the shaft I could not put them back in the lathe to turn them (no centers and a flexible joint in the middle). So the poor builder is trying to get a shaft to size and keep it round with Emory paper and causing out the engineer. Unfortunately I am both of those people so it isn't super productive!

But I keep working away. A little at a time. Maybe by the time m kids are your kids age ca take this thing for a ride, my oldest is 3 so I may be on pace for that. Glad to hear you are making progress again.

Ya, for sure, it's great being both the engineer and builder when everything is going smooth, sucks though, when it don't. The emery cloth thing is a really slow go, not sure how expensive the sleeves you are dealing with are, but I would be sorely tempted to scrap them and get new when faced with resizing them with emery, but it can be done if you have the patience.

Well it has been a long long time since I have posted any progress on my project. I sold the machine that there is a picture of in the original post. I bought a series 2 marsh model in michigan. It actually ran and was complete. I wanted to have some kind of protection for the driver so I built the cage that you can see in the link. I fixed some body problems that it had and I am planning to put the 4 stroke in this one.

I finished the roll cage last week and took it out for a ride in the snow this morning. I am pretty excited to run this machine through the winter.
