  • KruSty CooT: WagZ new Build..

    Well folks,

Tax return season is upon us, and there are deals to be had out there. Some may say "Good things come to those who wait", and wait i did..because i just got my "Good thing" yesterday thanks to Amphibious Drew, and JPSwift! (thanks boys!!)

my new amphibious toy arrived at about 2:50 pm yesterday...but its far from drivable, or amphibious. My son, cody, was just as happy as i was about it!! lol

lol Its got Giant, Gaping holes in the body, The wrong motor/transmission setup, Snow and ice in it, and the front gear box needs thawed out and taken apart and then re-sealed and bearing-ed. The rear box seems to be just fine actually, but ill probably take it apart and reseal/bearing it as well. The Main shafts that the worm rides on MIGHT be screwed too..PO did some presidential engineering on it and yah...they are messed up!! The driveshaft fits pretty loose on the one box....not a good thing. So..may need them too.. Damn!!

Then ill need to take the ENTIRE thing apart, and patch/weld the body up. Ashtabula this year??...ehhh.....i doubt it but MAYBE...MAAYYYYBBEEEEE. (need alot of things before then and money dont grow on trees!) I found a transmission for it via a member here thankfully, and then ill need clutchs and a motor for it. But main thing is gettin body put together properly.

SO my list of stuff i need:
    Trans: (found one)
    Engine and both clutchs:
Input shafts for front and rear diffs:
..and lots of reading how to dis-assemble, and how it all works! lol
I have officially caught the 6-wheel-sickness!!

Well. I'm not going to say congrats on this one, not yet anyway. At least its not so far gone that it doesn't have potential. Some metal work and mechanical overhaul and you should be on the mark.

I am glad you got it. These things are few and far between.

Thanks Noel, no worries. Ill get it fixed up with time. TOday is firewood cuttin day, so i aint got any time into playing with it really. As for body, ill get that fixed up pretty easily. The other misc pieces are what ill have to hunt for. The input shaft might throw me for a loop but we'll see. and figureing out how the damn front torque transmitter comes outta the coot oughta be intersting too...seems as though i have to pull steering spindles off, Universal jointed knuckles and then axle tubes and then slide it from side to side? I guess we'll see! lol

Yup, thats going to need some TLC....Interesting drive train set-up, vertical shaft engine with a lawnmower transmission. I've thouight about using a vertical shaft engine in my COOT when I convert to hydraulic drive. Vertical shaft engines are easier to find and usually cheaper to buy. The torque transmitter shafts are easy to make, they are just a piece of 3/4" shaft with a couple keyways cut into them. Welcome to COOTville....

                Thanks coop,

so your saying the TT shafts are 3/4?? I measure mine with a vernier calipers, and its coming out at a good nominal 1" diameter? thats on front and rear tt's...am i missing something? i was figuring on just buying some 1" keyed shaft and re-doing the front TT shaft, and also putting hydraulic brakes on it..by looks of htings though, the way this creature is setup...and as tough as it is to turn the worm gear setup via the axles, i doubt brakes will be needed much...id have to say only for parking. lol

Also, for your Hydraulic idea...ive been kicking that around a good bit also..wouldnt take much to do that with these buggers, and it'd free up some major room! however, saving money with the verticle engine would only go towards the hydraulic drive motors. drive motors can be expensive if ya dont got great access to them. Id like to see what ya do if ya do end up doing hyrraulic drive.

Yes, you are right, they are 1", not 3/4", I was thinking about the prop drive shaft that I made for mine, that was 3/4.

Brakes aren't needed under most conditions, only time I've wished I had them was when climbing a steep hill and not being able to make it and having to back down, you want to shift into reverse quickly and not miss the shift, otherwise you'll be freewheeling, gets scary fast. A hydraulic caliper off a motorcycle or similar would probably work good.

My plan is to use a single hydraulic motor to replace the Apex gearbox, with the hydraulic drive, I'll have brakes just by moving my motion control in the opposite direction. I have the pump and FNR valve, and I've sourced the motor, just got to get around to doing it. I'm going to have to get a higher HP engine too, Looking for a Vanguard 23HP, that is about what it will take to drive the pump to get enough flow to drive the motor so I don't loose any ground speed that I have now with the transmission.

Good deal, i went back outside and measured my input shaft and seen it was 1" again so i was like ok..either my coot has been bastardized, or something is up? lol so anyhow, i found tons of 1" keyed shaft for pretty cheap so thats a plus. EBAY! lol pretty much ALL the parts except a few can be had via TSC, Ebay or Surplus Center. Its the specialty things that cannot be had there.. which im sure ill pay a lot for! lol Trans is biggest thing ill need once i get body built back to specs but ive already spoke about that. ill have to make a S/N over at coot world and try to find bearing numbers N all that good jazz. Today i noticed the Set screws (square headed ones) are busted off on the Left side of machine. The ones that hold the universal joint knuckle to the front axle...so thats a lovely thing. lol Ill drill and EZ out em.

Hey coop/Noel, just how fast will these things travel?

I've had my GPS in mine, 15 mph is all I could get, but mine is geared down a little from stock. But 15 mph is enough w/o suspension. I have a list of the common parts, but I can't seem to get it listed here, I'll send it to you by e-mail...

Glad Jeff and I could help you attain your new toy there Wagz! It looks like a good machine for you. I think the holes and everything just take away from the cash value you needed to pay for it, and is really no big deal for you to fix. Anyways, congratulations and thanks for getting some pics of your dirty old coot up for me to look at.
l like to buy stuff and no I don't do payments!
