  • amphicat retore under way

well i started on sunday with an old worn out working amphicat 6x6 picked this thing up for 400 bucks the guy couldnt figure out the steering which i worked on it and got it mechanically working before the tare down.. i rode it a few times in the winter but it just keep breaking because eveything was worn out, bearings, chains, axles bent.. so im gonna do the whole deal. im even considering upgrading the axle size and chain size because im gonna probably ride a little hard

so i started with ripping the wheels and axels off was a pain had to cut 2 off and hammer them in for later removal once the frames out of the tub.. IMG_1738.jpgIMG_1739.jpg
    next was motor removal

pic of motor out of frame/tubIMG_1730.jpg
next i removed the trans IMG_1734.jpg
only reason i removed trans and motor first was to save my back.. i managed to not have my cherry picker handy
then i managed to get the frame out still heavy with out the trans and engine

thanks guys... any suggestions what i should look into if im changing the chain size. i know basics such as changing gears and what not.. im even thinking of trying to change the manual brake setup to some kind of hydraulic brake calipers form a motor cycle or something.. seemed like while i had it riding it didnt have good stoping power for turning.. or... maybe the turning clutch setup wasnt releasing all the way.. ether way its all getting torn apart to be cleaned painted and re greased.

Hi new guy. am a newbie here also and am restoring an amphicat also. Although mine is the earlier model. Hopefully we can exchange notes. I havn't really got going yet other than picking up a few parts and information. Good luck and can't wait for the next installments!

and this is why im gonna up grade the bearings and what not to larger bearings axles and chains photo(30).jpg

if you notice on the above pic theres only 1 bearing and the other side is a bushing.. well i dont like that and if im gonna up grade axles i better just do this right..

should i make everything for my axle up grade or can i buy something thats already made?

since deciding to go with larger axles and redesigning the drive setup for the axles

anyone see a prob with a bearing like this(1-1/4" Four Bolt Flange Bearing W/ Lock Collar HCFS207-20) for the inner and outer axle bearings.. i wanna get away form that bushing and bearing shaft to a 1 1/4 axle with a new sprocket setup that will be welded to a hollow tub and then bolted to the new axle

For the outer bearings you will want some that are triple sealed. That is denoted by an "r3" at the end of the bearing number so look for bearings that have that designation. Otherwise you will be replacing the outer bearings quite frequently.

Ok thanks even tho the outer bearings are in side the tub? It has some kind of water grease seal on the out side

Maybe not. I looked back through your photos but couldn't tell exactly what the outer flange houses. Do you have a photo of the axle sticking through the outside of the tub so I can see what you are talking about? Or maybe someone with an Amphicat can chime in as they would know.

ok this is what i got
this is how the bearing/bushing tube is it sits in the general spot both bearing/bushing sit on the inside of the frame.. then the axle slides threw IMG_1781.jpg

IMG_1782.jpgIMG_1785.jpgIMG_1783.jpgIMG_1784.jpgthis is the flange deal that goes on the out side of the tub i assume the rubber is not original the humped steel outer side piece does have a hard plastic bushing in it also(maybe?).. tho my idea for upgrading the axles im not gonna be able to reuse this piece and this is kind of my holding point for buying the parts.. how to seal the water out?
