  • Silent Running Buggy

    Hi guys

Was surfing the TV channels and come to the movie silent running and it happened to be on one of the parts where they are racing around in the lil buggy things
My question is what are they as all I've been able to find is they are called cyclops and they were custom made vehicles

Does anyone have any other info on them maybe where they ended up or who made them ?
Does someone on here own one?
    Does anyone have any plans?
Anyone idea how the steering works?
Where would I look for info like what studio or prop house they used or filmed at?
    Where was silent running filmed?

Any Help or info would be nice
    Please just let me know

wfo I've found that the 2001 a space odyssey was just an Amphicat
Found out that the vehicles I've posted for were dismantled after filming so going about making my own now

The movie these were featured in was called "Silent Running." I remembered this movie from childhood just because of these machines and the little robots.

Yup Noel your right the film was silent running and wish the buggys weren't dismantled as they were sooo cool and there were no plans made so having to make one all just off photos so it's bloody hard as I have no idea what axles they used if I knew that I'd have some to start

Huey, Dewey, and Lewie. They stuck out in my memory, too.

Good luck on the project, 10K. Keep a picture log going as you progress!

Rusty I can find you plans on making your own drones/robots if you'd like rusty or don
I will don once I get building it but it's hard to scale with only photos and no idea what axles are used as I understand the steering

Here are the only construction photos I have of the buggys being built

I remember reading back in the day, that the robots were actually operated by humans. The director of the movie found some folks who were very athletic actors that had lost their legs, either by accident or by birth, and had learned to walk around on their hands. I always thought that the movement of the robotic legs looked very familiar, and if you watch the movement closely, you can see that the articulation is actually human hands in a special glove covering that emulates a robot leg.

                      Just another little known fact.

Tom, they're not skid steer, the front wheels do the steering so you could build one on any small chassis (go kart, buggy, quad etc). Have you been to the States yet, if so, what you brought back ?

                          Hi Rod
No not yet will be leaving in about a week or so but still waiting on the measurements of the Amphicat off you
Yeah I've got plans on how to do the steering just can't find any axles for it to start off to build the chassis with
I brought a nice Quadzilla Ram100 I was going to use for parts but the axles/wheels are a bit to small and plus it's a pretty nice quad to strip when it's works 100%
Looking at the photos Rod they are 5 stud hubs so I'm guessing small trailer axles but can't seem to find any that are not already trailers
Did you just see that Max2 on ebay that just ended
