  • New And In Need Of Help!

    I Have A Max Ii (running At This Time, Thank Heaven) And A New (to Me) Terra Tiger, Allis Chalmers Tt-10. The Tiger Has A Big Problem With The Front Left Sprocket. It Is Not Hooked Up To The Left Front Wheel And I Can't Figure Out How To Connect The Sprocket To The Axle. Axle Turns, Wheel Doesn't. The 6 X 6 Came With A Blurry Owners Manual And No Other Information. A Really Good Diagram Of How The Axle In Front Should Look With The Chains, Etc Would Be Of Enormous Help. A Wiring Diagram Would Be Nice Also. I Need To Find A Service Manual And Parts Manual, If They Made One For This Machine. I Think It Is A 1970 As It Is Green, Not Orange Like The First Year Was. I Would Appreciate Any Help Any One Could Give Me. I Have Been Watching This Site For A Long Time And Have Found All My Questions On Atvs Answered Except This One. Thanks,

    Hey Chuck,

    A Terra Tiger dude should really chime in, but in the meantime, I'll give it a shot. So the sprocket is turning AND the axle is turning, but not the wheel? On most older machines, the sprocket tube is connected to the axle with a pin (a bolt, really) that passes through the two. This is the same scenario for the axle, and the wheel hub (which the wheel and tire are mounted to.) These pins (in my experience) act as fuses for the driveline, as they break before a chain or an axle does, making repairs much more simple and inexpensive. I would check to see that your axle pins (bolts) are all in good shape, and good and tight. Real tight. Most of the time, they become loose, and will prematurely wear either the sprocket tube, or the axle itself, making it very difficult to keep them tight.

            Sound's like you need new pin for drive sprocket and axle as Mike and Racerone3 have said. Fronts ones wear & break the most! They drive with a solid pin with external groves. 5/16 X 2" grove pin. But you may also have worn out axle and sprocket. As holes in them get loose- long gated- and allow the pin to come out or shears it off and falls out. You can try new pin in it. If it does drive in tight, you'll have to decide which way you want to fix it. Temporary or to last. Temporarily we have used grade 5 or grade 8 bolt and nut to replace pin. You need to cut excess treads off just a smuge above nut. Then install, tighten and center punch end treads to secure nut. Another option if not to worn is to drill them out over size and put larger metric pin or bolt in them. Or you can remove axle and sprocket to have them welded up and re drill holes. Axle's can be made or brought. Route 6X6 has some weld on blocks to repair sprocket with also. Or you can make some. Any questions email or call. And we can help you out!

                So... Am I understanding clearly... both the sprocket AND axle turn but not the wheel? I must be missing something. How can this be, given the above scenario? Would your machine have pinned sleeves for the wheel hub by any chance? Seems to me that if it were the pins through the sprocket sleeve/axle then the axle and wheel would turn but not the sprocket, or vice~versa.

                  This can happen when the axle breaks right at the pin that holds the sprocket on. Mine did this and beacuse the pin didnot break and the axel is heald in place on bolth ends the pin acts like a phillips head screw driver turning the inner 1/2 while the outer dose not. So the axel and sprocket are turning but in side the sprocket sleeve the outer 1/2 of the axel dose not

                    Wheelie has a point! Could have sheared axle off inside the sprocket! I've never had one shear off, but anything is possible! He hasn't let us know if pin is in sprocket and if it's sheared off. If pin is good then axle has to be sheared off at hole location and sprocket is holding it in place and outside is spinning free. Easy to check! Hold inside sprocket and chain from turning and have someone turn wheel. Its not hard to remove, unbolt 4 bolts holding the outer axle brg. flange and remove axle. We normally use a slide hammer puller on them. But if its broke it should come off without. Let us know what you find.

                      Now we're getting somewhere, you see, given the scenario that he described, there had to be more to his problem than a broken pin. I broke the front left axle on my hustler....twice, so I am just a little bit familiar with that sprocket/inner axle does but wheel doesn't thing.

                      Grind a bevel and weld, turn back to size, drill through bolt hole to clean, slap 'er back in and go.

                      Funny thing, after I removed the dozer blade that I had been pushing trails with , the broken axle syndrome went away
