  • Ripping apart primary drive shafts (Terra Tiger)

I ripped apart two of the three primary drive shafts. The shear pins were an unbelievable PIA to get out, but most of the rest of the pieces came out OK....until I got the driven clutches. I could not get either off of the shaft. So I am going to roll the dice and hope that they are still operational. So, instead of having new shafts made (because the shear pin holes are a little egged out), I am going to have the holes filled and redrill.

    QUESTION #1:

Is there any way to bench test the driven clutches to see if they are operational?

Next, I found a local guy that will re-line my clutches for $20 each. It is such a sweet deal that I decided to tear apart the third Primary Drive Shaft (PDS) and take those clutches in too. I think the third primary drive was probably recently rebuilt by Richards Relics....at least that is what the seller told me. I say recent, but I think it has sat for a number of years. The third one did not have shear pins, but instead, grade 5 bolts with nuts. When I pulled the bolts out, the clutches and everything sprung out pretty strongly. The other two did not "spring out" at all. So I am guessing that I need to replace the springs on the other two.

    QUESTION #2

What springs do y'all recommend to replace the ones I took out and where can I get them?

    QUESTION #3

When I drop the clutches for re-lining, are there any special instructions? I believe the material needs to be 3/16", is that correct? Also, what is the best clutch material for these?

You should have undone spring tension before you drove pins out. You might have to pull or press clutch hubs off shaft. As they normally fit tight! We press them in place when reassembling them. You should check for wear on bushing-sleeve of driven pulley. Clutch material i don't have type or brand. Can probably find out from shop that did ours. We still haven't put our last set in to test. Springs I'm still searching for supplier.

Live and learn I guess! Thanks for the input. Think I am going to begin fiberglass work this weekend. I might have one of these things driving yet this winter....minus paint though.
