  • Just starting on my 8X8 KID, brand new to AATVs

IMG_0727.jpgHey everyone, I just picked up my 1970 Kid 8X8. I didn't even know what one was until I ran across this one. I had to have it! I hog hunt along the river south of Stillwater OK and that's what made me think I needed it. It's yellow, has tires, the fenders, no windshield, all new chains and runs good. I did get three manuals with it and allot of spare chain parts. It doesn't have seats, or choke cable or throttle cable and needs all wired up. I have already found a few places on the web that sell parts and the guy I got it from gave me the number to some guy in Kansas so I think I have a good start on fixing it all up. My plan it to build a basic cage for it and integrate some winch mounts into the cage as I build it. I know I need to keep the weight down as I am doing this. I see them with the dual wheels and tracks and I wonder will I need this, what is really gained or is it just something that makes it cooler. I have read some old threads and I have some ideas from reading them.

Anyhow just wanted to say Hi as a new member and let you all know what I was up to.

Hi brad, welcome to the site. Congratulations on your KID. That should make the perfect hog hunting vehicle. Tracks can give you greater surface area contacting the ground which will lower the pressure that you exert. The less pressure you exert, the less you sink. Dual wheels do the same thing. Tracks can also pull you through mud and keep you from getting hung up on things like small fallen trees that could get between your tires. As to whether or not you need them, it depends on the terrain you ride in. Most people can get along fine without them. I would just run the tires and see how well it does.

I tried that phone number for Shoson Industries in Kansas that I was told had all the parts for this KID, Message said this number is not a working number. What's up with that? Any one know.

Oh I've learned allot already reading all of you guys old posts. I have just about got what I want to do to my kid down in my head. I have to get the new engine in my skid steer loader and fix the water pump on the tractor then the KID will get my full attention. The one thing I am up in the air on is weather or not to keep the fenders on. They are banged up but I can fix them. I'm thinking I could shave some weight and not have to worry about banging them up again after I fix them. I see more pictures with out them.

I did get Mike on Email and the contact info on the web is good to go to get a hold of him. And yes I found your web site, I found it as I was researching weather or not I even really wanted this thing. Looks like you have redone several KID's. As it looks to me I shouldn't have any trouble finding any parts for the KID. I got a list to Mike and he has most everything I need. The main thing is a windshield frame. Most everything else I can get at napa or make. I am trying to figure out the best direction to go on seats, any ideas?

The body looks to be in very good shape without much rust.

No not much at all, just a few dents on the front and back of the fenders. Nothing I cant bang out, and I do have the bed and it's in about the same shape.

Brad, I also recently purchased 2 Kids, 1 running and one not running. I also need 1 windshield and frame and panel. How much for the parts? I don't know what I will do with them, just had a feeling they might be fun. Am thinking of adding 2 props on 1 for use in my pond on the farm. I probably need to get proper tires for swimming if I don't add the props. I thought about 2 for steering, controlled by switches and electric clutches belt driven by PTO shaft inside the body. Just a thought!
