My very first guess is that it's the remnants of a smoking hut used for meat preservation. A low, smoldering fire would have been corraled in the stone foundation, and arched branches would have held a thatch (or other material) roof. The fine gravel around the stone base would have limited the airflow (and heat flow) into the hut to a selected place, likely a flap near the entrance at the one end.
Just a guess, though. It looks like it could also be a chunk of Hadrian's Wall, but it's a little out of place in BC.
very cool RD.is it any deeper with the leaves cleaned out?i found something similar once but it was bigger.my old man and i were coon hunting when we stumbled across it.had stone walls and the roof was missing.after clearing away some debris we found it had a well inside and what way have been a cold room.should go back and find it and take some pictures.before it turns into a subdivision.
I agree with micmac, I think it is a cellar. When I was in the Army in Europe, I saw many such delapidated structures and the older folks told me they were cold cellars. With the advent of refrigeration they fell into disuse.
There are a lot of neat ideas of what that rock formation is. Here is a bit more info:
We were aproximatly 70 kms (by water) UPSTREAM of the old Hudson Bay Company Trading Post, located at the junction of the Ft Nelson River and the Liard River.
I carefully dusted away leaves and debris from inside the structure, and found no indication of fire.
The stone chips (Shale) all around the structure is EVERYWHERE. All the black gravel in this pic is that same type of stone.
Now that we're onto stones, here are some more pics from the trip
Uncracked "Eggs"
The size reference changed my opinion. It looks like a fire pit, final answer.
That was my initial few thoughts as well. Maybe a smoker, or an oven, maybe just a simple fire pit, but I looked closely and there is no sign of any fire there. No soot, no char, no heat signs/cracks in the rocks. If I went to the trouble of building that, I'd use it once or twice.
It's a mystery
It became obvious to me when I saw the picture with your daughter in it, it's an early time-out box. Apparently children could be difficult in the past also. Seriously, those fossils are cool! What is the story with those? Are they all just laying there near camp. Treasure from the past, could definately sell that stuff.

I brushed some leaves out, it looks like the bottom of the structure is at ground level and not sunk below. No sign of char or heat cracking in the stones.

The fossils are literally EVERYWHERE, lots are already cracked open, and there are still lots all around that are not opened up yet. I have some vid that I need to edit, but have not had any time. It's worth the wait, I think you will find it pretty cool.
