This is very cool.... Your rocks are called concretions. It's not all that uncommon to find them in some parts of the Northeast US, but up in BC I'd wager it's a LOT more uncommon. They start to form when minerals start to precipitate in wet, buried sediment; usually around a small chunk of organic matter (plants, critters, etc....) There are places in Indiana that are world famous for their concretions, and people literally come from all points of the globe to break them apart to investigate the goodies inside. The petrified wood that you found sort of fits the environment as well.
Taking the Argo's and boats out to get to the spot makes this all that much more interesting. Geology is fun, but finding a legitimate reason to throw in some powersports? Way cool....
