  • Homemade propane burner

Occasionally I have a need to heat the odd piece of iron for bending or shaping for some project or another. The cutting torch I use is one that the wife's granddad had, I let my Dad keep my rig to use when I married and moved and just never have gotten it back. Since I have no rosebud setup on the torch here, heating a piece of iron of any size can take quite a while, and can be impossible once a certain size limit is reached. So, I started searching around and found this site, the site owner does a lot of casting parts and there is a lot of good information on the site. I just got back from the local hardware store rounding up a few pieces to build one. Thought I would link this up in case any of you might be interested in building any of the cool gadgets listed on his site for your own use. I'll take pics as I go and post them on this thread later. I think I will try building mine so that it could be dual use - like a rosebud- or mounted stationary for "forge" type work. Check out the site it's got some fun projects and a lot of useful info.

Got it built yesterday, kids had some friends over so I shut down to make Fajitas for the family and company. I did get a few pics, but I want to do a short video so I can post it all up together. It works great, but I decided to build the first one like the one on the site to kinda check for bugs ya' know.
Couple of things I learned: the hole MUST be centered across the 1/8" pipe, otherwise some of the gas (unburned) will escape out the 3/8" holes and stink up the shop. ( not to mention it could all go BOOM)So I tack welded the original one back up and re-drilled the 2nd time the RIGHT way, vise on Smithy mill, center finder, starter drill a small dimple to be certain everything was straight, then at highest speed, drill the hole.
I used a piece of 26 gauge sheet metal to make my flare, and it didn't roll real pretty. If you try to build one, just get it as close as you can and don't sweat it, because it can be worked into shape really easy after a few minutes of burn time, while it is RED hot.
I was tempted to spot weld the pipes in place from the get-go but am glad I didn't, the setscrew allows for "fine tuning" to get everything burning just right.
Now it does sputter if I crank it wide open from the start, but figured out if it is allowed to burn for a few seconds then up the gas, it will "draw" better and not sputter.

Grilling burgers for lunch, but will let the kids play after and video some of it to post up.

Finally got around to loading a short video to you tube. It is a time test while heating what was an ordinary flat file- before we started playing around with it, that is. The torch seems to be fairly fast.

Also took a few pics, two of these are of the new shop during the build process.
