  • Old man with toys in the garage!!!!!

Wanted to share an interesting story with you guys. For the past year, I have been working for my mom and dad in their magazine company. They have a magazine called Healthy Cells Magazine and another called 50 Plus News and Views (which I am buying out in the near future) Since I have started working for them, they pretty much let me have the reigns with the News and Views magazine. Its pretty much all stuff for seniors, and me being only 29 I wanted to kinda "youngin" it up a bit. So I started doing a monthly article called "Blast from the Past". I go to car shows, find senior with a classic car, I take pictures of the car and then go on to write an article about the ownership history, and restoration. Then I write about the actual vehicle history, of why the manufacture, designed the car the way it did. Its been catching on pretty well, a lot better than I thought it would.

Yesterday I got a call from a guy about a half hour North of me, that about made me fall out of my chair! This guy asked if I was the one writing the car articles, when I said I was, he said he would really like to get his cars in. He said he has a 1987 Buick Grand National GNX! I couldnt believe it! A real GNX! If you dont know what a GNX is, it was a Grand National, but one of 547 made as a commemorative fair-well. EXTREMELY rare, highly collectible and best of all, very very fast! Those cars were known as the "vette killers" and would run low 13's right off the lot! He said its #157, and mint condition.

Then he told me about his other car....1966 Dodge Charger with a 426 HEMI!!! 5spd manual, tweaked to about 750 hp, and a total sleeper! Not tubbed, or anything like that, he said if you didnt know what was under the hood, you would think it was an original restoration with the exception of some nice wheels! Then he says, yea I got those, a Viper, a new Challenger and Charger (both SRT8) and a few other muscle cars here and there. He asked if Id be interested in getting them in the magazine, and I said ABSOLUTELY!!!! So im heading out there this weekend to take some pictures!

I used to have a Grand National in high school, and man talk about fun to drive! But mine was an 84 (non intercooled). it was fast, but not stupid fast. I told him about it and he said—so when was the last time you drove a turbo car? I told him its been about 11 years since I blew up the motor on mine. Then he said—ever drive a HEMI? NOPE! He said i tell ya what, you come out there this weekend, and maybe you can drive both of them!!! I about did a cart wheel when I got off the phone! If anyone on here is interested in seeing these cars, I can post pictures if you want! just let me know! Have a good one everyone!

you should do a story on the most popular holiday spots 50 plus people like to go, and of course you would have to check out the locations to validate them as popular, and to do interviews and photo shoots.the best part is it would be a tax deduction.

i used to service and drive one of my old customers GNX's every year, atleast once a year. And your right, for their time, they we're the most bada$$ cars at the time. the old intercooled 3.8 turbo was the bomb! Old Vin K block has been usefull forever! lol

Yea I have a huge passion for those cars! here in the next few years Im hoping to get my hands on a turbo regal of some sort, preferably a grand national but I would settle for a nice t-type as long as it is an 86 or 87.....once i have one of those, my next dream car is a 77 smokey and the bandit trans am.....I want one of those so bad I can taste it, they werent super fast but with a little tweaking, it could be a runner

Back in the 90's I had a Typhoon with the Grand Nat engine. That was one quick brick.

Ive only ever seen one typhoon in person, at a car show. it was fully show also, chrome everything, spotless and powder coated. I used to own a Cavalier 3.1, and i was ALWAYS trying to hunt down a motor and brain box from the Turbo Grand AM's they built in the late 80's. they didnt make many of them, but they DID make some turbo 3.1's GM had a big "turbo" kick about the same era as the GNX, Typhoon/Tsunami, and Grand am Turbos. everyone recall the UGLY old grandam's? Big long ugly lookin things. lol i recall my buddy had one that didnt have any interior door panels and half the dash missing. not to forget the busted out windows that he "Bagged" lol ugh... anyhow..yah. lol

pontiac had a lot of ugly designs in the early 90's and late 80's...I dont know who they had designing, but man they were ugly! but at the same time most all of the compacts of that era were horrible, and it sucks that their turbo experiments didnt really take off. Itd be fun to be able to find some old turbo car of some sort to have fun with, but their not really worth the money....speaking of which, heres a pic of a car very similar to a car my buddy had in highschool...he sure thought it was cool and I didnt have the heart to tell him how ugly it was hahahaha

The Syclone and Typhoon series are a limited production 91-93 trucks. The intercooled turbo and AWD combine to make muscle car torque that gets serious traction. If you find one, make every effort to snatch it up!

I'm testing the memory banks, but I'm going to guess it was back in 1996 or 1997 that my Dad and I were at a junkyard on an Indian reservation here in WNY. We were out hunting for some AMC stuff, but back (waaaaaay back) in one of the fence rows was a Syclone, neatly backed between a couple trees, up on blocks with a big garage door stacked in front of it.

I about died when I saw it. When we were leaving with our freshly obtained Javelin dash, I asked the owner about it. I'll always remember the look he gave me for about 10 solid seconds without saying a word, before finally arriving at "It's not for sale".

I knew it wasn't for sale, but even at that age I felt the need to call people on stuff. The thing was so hot you could see the glow for miles.

As I remember, many "borrowed" cars showed up abandoned arround the res at that time...... and maybe that was a worried look because you saw through the garage door camo......

haha yea he was probably hiding it.....and soon after you left, I bet he piled on more garage doors to cover it up more hahaha! My grand national I had was a theft recovery, the previous owner said it was stolen from him and found parted out. He put in a new engine interior and everything to make it complete, I didnt care, I knew that was the only way a high schooler from a broke family (me) could afford it haha, it was still a fun car! There are a couple typhoons on ebay I spotted and one syclone....I think the syclone would be more fun, in terms of power to wieght ratio
