  • How many people on the site Varmint hunt?

Thismorning i went out for a couplde hours and shot some groundhogs and later this evening when i was reloading i got to thinking wounder how many people on the site varmint hunt..... just woundering who dose and what kinda gun is preferred

This summer im shooting a cz 527 chambered in 17 rem(not rimfire the centerfire version) and my grilfriend shoots a Remington 700 VTR 22-250

In the fall I like to call coyotes and once and a while go out for prairie dogs. Weapon of choice either a savage 110 in 22-250 or a rock river ar-15 in .223. If calling in timber the remington sp-10 comes out loaded with 000 buck.
My collection: 2) attexes, 1) super swamp fox

used to blast a lot of ground hogs years ago around here.was lots of fun untill urban sprawl took over my stomping grounds.loved hitting them with the 25-06 in a ruger but then bought a remington in a 22-250 for cheaper reloads.you sure brought back some fond memories.

i like to use the mosin nagant, which fires 7.62x54's. Sure, its enough to take out a deer as well, however, there's 2 reasons i use it for varmints. 1) there's no rodent clean up...lol 2) bulk surplus ammo is cheap, just have to clean your firearm very well afterwards..which in my book is a must anyhow.

sometimes i'm over by your hosue lee, not exactly within seeing range or nothing like that, but near girty.

I used to build up my college fund back in the early '80s hunting coyotes and bobcats in South Texas. Typically used an AR15, but also popped a few with a Remington 700 in .308.

Its hard to believe that it has been 30 years...

I'm not on Varmint Hunt, but I do go out when I can. No Gophers around here, but there are other critters.
Tools of choice, depending on how I feel that day.
              Ruger 10/22
              Winchester .222
              Ruger 220 Swift

I'm always blasting squirrels with my ruger .22 pistol. Dang squirrels are terrible at chewing up the yard. I use my S&W 12ga pump shotgun on the nests I find.

I hunt squirrels (if you want to call a squirrel a varmint, I just call them delicious) with my Ruger 10/22, using CCI Stingers. The real varmints aroud here are black birds in the rice fields. My Browning Auto-5 with some light loads makes quick work of them . I just take a lawn chair and a cooler and sit in the shade all afternoon...

Coyotes and groundhogs in this area. Bushmaster AR15 H-Bar does well for them. Heading down to Texas this year to help a friend of mine with a wild hog problem tearing the crap out of his property. The M14A does very well for these nasty critters.

I have a friend at work and hogs are tearing up his hunt clubs land. They already destroyed 3 deer feeders.. got them on the game camera, counted about 20 hogs in one picture. The plan is to go out and set up around a feeder and make a kill box around it. I've got my M4 in 6.8SPC and my old reliable M1 in .30-06, not sure which I want to take maybe both.

                        Dan67,
Either one will do well on them. Getting through that bone armor is tough to make a clean drop.

Ruger 10/22, LR s/p, or round nose, 1 just behind either ear will drop 'em on their front feet... every time. Down here we can now hunt hogs at night with a light, and if you want to put out the bucks, you can use a suppressor (silencer). I'm sure I could build one, and have considered trying it, but am unsure exactly which application form to fill out. If what I have read is correct, it's the same form you would use to build a firearm. Would LOVE to try it, but it ain't worth the risk without having the correct documentation beforehand. There is a 1 time tax of $200 to buy the stamp to posses a suppressor and you must have the stamp with you when carrying/using the suppressor. I know all that, just unsure about which form, anybody have any knowledge on this?

Also, to get the whisper quiet, I would have to use sub-sonic rounds, they're the long rifle equivalent of the old 22 shorts we used to shoot as kids. Problem there is, if you're hog hunting, at night, you will probably want something with a little more punch. I still think it would be sweet to play around with though.

                            Brushcutter,
you need two ATF form 1's
Two FD-258 "Blue" FBI fingerprint cards
Two ATF F5330.20 Certification of compliance with 18 U.S.C. 922
                            Two passport photos
One U.S. postal money order or check for 200.00 made payable to U.S. Treasury Dept.
You also need the signature of the Chief Law Enforcement officer over your residential address.

You must be sporting a pair the size of church bells to get that close to a hog with a subsonic .22! I enjoy being able to walk too much to get that close myself....

around here we have a difficult time classifying the word varmint...used to be coyotes, grondhogs and the like...now it seems to be crackheads and degenerates that use the obits to stake thier next burglary or meth kitchen....law enforcement can do nothing about it unless you pop somebody and they tell me they will take me to jail and prosecute.....so who here can classify varmint? is it the burglars, the meth heads or the cops....am willing to hunt all or any....no pun intended...almost forgot...for smaller game I prefer an extremely old j.c.higgins .22 mag with a 3x9x40 bushnell, larger critters I prefer marlin .444 mag, and degenerates and low lifes, I love my parker arms dbl 12 loaded with OO buck... have a great many more to choose from but those are my favorites...
