I was wondering if it was possible to hook up a tach to the 18hp brigs.I saw in the gallery that bazzoo Guy had one hooked up to a two stroke. If anyone explains this, please keep it simple. I am not a mechanic!

I use a tiny tach on my 18 vanguard in my attex. It works as an hour meter too and is very easy to hook up. Its a hot wire and a ground and then you wrap this white stiff wire around your #1 cylinders spark plug wire. That's all there is too it really besides mounting it. Oh yeah, all the 4 stroke tiny tachs were the same when I got mine except if you had a kohler. For some reason kohlers use a specially designated tach.
One more thing, may sound stupid, which cylinder is the #1. Front or back cylinder?
Tiny Tach is one of many different manufacturers that make spark plug wire triggered "Tach w/hour meter combo".
They all work the same way, they sense the pulse to the spark plug. There are usually different settings for 2 stroke (spark on each revolution), and 4 stroke (spark every other revolution), ....BUT, most of our 4 stroke motors still spark on every revoution because they are triggered off the flywheel.
I have been buying these Cabela's: Trail Tech TTO Tach/Hour Meter
and they have a simple one wire hook up.
That's a good looking tach, and I bet it is accurate and easy to read.....BUT, I'm confused. How do you hook it up to make it read correctly?
Even if the sense wire will trigger off a spark plug wire What setting do you use? The 4 cyl (4stroke) setting would take 2 sparks per rpm, would you run the trigger wire long enough to trigger off BOTH spark plugs?
