I looked into this a bit and decided to go with a Trail Tech unit. I just received it and it has not been installed. I ended up deciding on this unit: Trail Tech 752-2013 Black Vapor Stealth Computer : Amazon.com : Automotive

I managed to get it delivered for just under a hundred dollars. Does tach, vehicle speed, odometer, air temp, engine temp, trip distance and time, overall engine time, etc. Hope it works well.
    Thanks,
    Gary

Even if the sense wire will trigger off a spark plug wire What setting do you use? The 4 cyl (4stroke) setting would take 2 sparks per rpm, would you run the trigger wire long enough to trigger off BOTH spark plugs?
That is the one that I have in my Max IV:

I think Lewis is running the same one. I don't remember what setting I used with mine but it did read correctly and it is triggered by the inductive pickup that goes around just one spark plug wire.

Thanks Mike. That will give me a better option for the next machine. The tiny ones work great for hourmeters, but not great as tachs.
Here is a video of one I took for tuning the clutches

As Mike said it uses an iductive pick-up placed on either plug wire. Then has a simple procedure to program tach for the number of cylinders. (1-12). Few tachs will do this. Only ones that say DIS compatible. (As far as I know)

I find the digital tachs are hard to see in sunlight
Heres the manual that explains the different types of connections.
            Direct hookup is best.

Which tach is easier to hook up...
              Autometer or
              Equis tachs
