  • Help with OMC 2 stroke

I just got a new (old) Trackster and it just doesn't want to run. I replaced the plugs cleaned the fuel system and cleaned the carb. It has the tillotson (sp?) carb which appears to be fine. The fuel pump has what appears to be good flow.

I can get the machine to start and run but the minute you put it under load it dies. It seems to want to run on the primer too, on this motor the primer is directly into the intake not through the carb. I pulled the fuel line off the pump and ran a squirt bottle directly to the carburetor to see if that would change it and it was the same or maybe even slightly worse. Just to be safe I started putting points in it but ran out of time to finish that job tonight.

Of anyone has any idea what to do next I am all ears. I appreciate the help.

    Nick

PS- I know the best thing to do is put a 4 stroke on it but that isn't going to happen this weekend. Maybe after I sell my other Trackster.

Not sure what carb you have but if it idles ok and stalls when you open the throttle try opening the high speed jet
    1/4 turn.
    What are they set at?
Should start at 1-1/4 turns and tune it when the engine is warm.

Have not tinkered with a Trackster in a while, but try spraying gas into carb while working throttle. Hopefully you will be able to tell if it is a carb problem by doing this.

I'm not sure how the car is set. I did get the manual for the carb so we can go through the set up step by step. Old 2 strokes are not my thing so I am pretty lost. My much more knowledgeable friend is concerned that it has a bad crank seal affecting vacuum. Does that seem feasible?

When it starts will it idle?
You could do a compression test on the cylinders and look for oil leaking at the crank seal.
If you can get it to idle the seals are probably ok.
If it stalls under load it sounds like its not getting enough fuel.
Look at your spark plugs and see if they are wet when it stalls.
It could be getting too much fuel.

Sound advice. It does idle, I was going to smoke test it to see how the seals were but everyone keeps saying carb so even though we cleaned it and all looks ok, we are going to pull it again and check it over. Hopefully update on status this weekend.

If you have a bad seal it may run like crap under load. I had an old rm125 that did this. While idling, spray a can of carb cleaner or ether around all areas that have seals or gaskets, starting with the carbs and moving around the engine. Hit the crank seals and base gaskets too. If the rpm increases, you've found your air leak. I also read on this site that someones drain plug in the bottom of the crankcase had fallen out. Once they put it back in, it ran fine. On the carb...I bought a winderosa rebuild kit for a tilly and it ran like crap. The air screw was slightly different in the kit. I put the old one back in and it worked fine. There is also a good video on youtube about rebuilding a tilly. It by a user named ishobie or something like that.
