You cant tell them apart from the exterior except the color; green=17hp // red=18hp. There may be some difference in the PTO come to think about it? More hp is always a good upgrade... RR

??? Mine's a red 17hp ?? The 18 is on ebay so thought it may be useful for spares some day if the parts will fit a 17hp.
What's the difference internally, anyone know ? For an extra 1hp it could be just carb and cam grind so thought perhaps all the main ingredients could possibly be the same.

The 17 hp has points & condensor ingition. The 18 is a CDI style ignition (I think). Worked on both but I wasn't working on the 18 hp ignition so I can't remember for sure. I know the 17 hp was a points & condensor as that's what we were troubleshooting.
