What size of crankshaft is on a magnum?
i asked on the engine forum but so far no one seems to know so ithought iwould ask here as its more argo specific, does anyone know the size of the crankshaft on an argo magnum, i know some of the earlier kohlers had a 1" threaded shaft but i want to make sure before i end up with the wrong crank on a new engine

Just did engine in 90 magnum with Kohler 18. Was 1" threaded. Had to have keyway cut to use clutch on a Briggs engine. If you have the original clutch pull it off and see. The Tecumseh engines all had keys that I've ever seen. To remove a threaded clutch I put about 5 feet of soft rope down one sparkplug hole then turn engine till locked up. Clutch is right hand thread, use a strap wrench to remove. Hope this helps

I see threaded cranks listed in Briggs and Stratton. What engine do you have? I would pull the original clutch to verify shaft and key or not. You may be able to remove center bolt and see if its keyed the threaded one has a small hole so you can't see the end of the crank. I had the old clutch keyed and reused it. Can always buy new keyed clutch but very spendy.

I don't know if the big vanguard will be available with a shaft smaller than 1 1/8"???
If price for new engine and clutch are better than proper engine with threaded crank the new clutch will be another upgrade. The new clutch is a lot better than the old one, hardly any moving parts.

the new argo clutch for the Kohler is 1 1/8" keyed. it does run the same width belt, center diameter at crankshaft will be a bit larger. that could be done with moving engine back a bit. The bolt patern on the m18 isnt the same as vanguard. before removing the old engine get some good measurements from the engine clutch to the driven and also from center line of both shafts.I like to lay a straight edge behind the engine clutch, hold flat to back of pulley and write down all stock measurements.
hope this helps and you get a new engine in and running.

ok, ive asked the dealer if it can come with a 1" threaded shaft, due to size constraints i may actually have to move the engine forward to fit it, what kind of length are newer argo belts? also is it an avenger clutch i should go for or would a conquest clutch work? so, turns out an engine swap is going to happen earlier than i thought, was friving home today when suddenly steam started pouring out of the front and the engine started spraying oil and making a noise like screws in a blender.Last edited by shizzles2; 04-27-2013, 06:38 AM.

The kohler 18hp magnum has a right hand thread. To remove you need to pull one spark plug, feed some 3/8 hemp or nylon rope into the cylinder to stop the piston from achieving TDC and then turn the clutch left. It will come off simple as pie.... unless it has never been off, or it is corroded on or..... Good luck shizzles // RR

The rest of the clutch is already off, it is just that one plate that is still not budging, also the engine at the moment is literally just the block and the
internals, cylinders etc are all off. also its a power bloc clutch so it was held on by a bolt through the inside of the crank, will new engines have this or will it be threaded on the outside?
