  • Briggs Vanguard Governor question

    Greetings folks!

I recently got my hands on a used 14hp Briggs Vanguard Vtwin that runs good (a bit rich, I think...the plugs are carboned up and so are the exhaust ports) and I'm wondering [I]how important is the governor to use of this engine as an ATV engine?[I] I like how a governed engine on a snowblower goes into grunt mode when diggin' through a drift but don't we do that on an AATV with the throttle control? Should I disable it? and if so, how?

    Thanks!

    Ken

Not the best idea to run ungoverned. Call RI and order the correct governor spring for use in an aatv.
l like to buy stuff and no I don't do payments!

Recreatives is on 60 Depot Street in Buffalo, NY. They're right off of William Street, across from the main Buffalo Post Office. They're great people to deal with there and very helpful.

Thanks a lot for all the great info! Sure is nice to have a site like this where you can go for help...I think back to the days before computers and I would have NEVER been able to tackle a project like this, since the only reference materials would exist in the library...and they DON'T exist in MY library for an Attex! Wow...invaluable resource, this is!

That's what we're here for, Ken. You'll need a green governor spring for the Briggs, which like Drew said is available from RI Amphibious Six-Wheel Drive All-Terrain Vehicles: MaxATVs - Call 1-800-255-2511 They'll also have the correct throttle handle, cable, and choke cable for this engine as well. They're great folks to deal with.

Also, to get 2 more horsepower out of your Briggs, check this out:

Jeff....there's a special throttle handle, cable and choke cable for this engine? I just figured I'd use whatever I could find! Anybody ever do any business with Richard's Relics? I see he's got a lot of stuff for these things too...

Ken, NEVER deal with Richard's Relics. A lot of his stuff is poor quality, his shipping and "handling" prices are extremely high, he is very rude to most people that call him on the phone, and he gets a lot of his parts directly from Recreatives and just jacks up the prices. Just go directly through Recreatives ( Amphibious Six-Wheel Drive All-Terrain Vehicles: MaxATVs - Call 1-800-255-2511 ) to get the correct, high quality parts, and EXCELLENT customer service, or for other parts just post a wanted ad here on 6X6World and there's a pretty good chance someone will have it.

The throttle cable and handle for a Max work perfectly on the Vanguards since most Max AATVs came with these engines, but you could probably use a bicycle brake handle and bicycle shifter cables and a lawn mower choke cable if you wanted to go the cheaper route. Either way will work, but the Recreatives stuff will hold up much, much better.
