Just noticed that kohler has there new diesel engines out. They are liquid cooled or air cooled. Air cooled 6.7 to 34.9 hp. Liquid cooled 16.8 to 64.4 hp.

In the Northern Tool & Equipment catalog , there is a Briggs & Stratton , Vanguard , Liquid cooled , diesel , that list for $4,699 and weighs 280 pounds !
A mechanic friend of mine has rigged up a series of filters mounted to a sheet of plywood. He gets cooking oil from local restaurants & has developed a 50/50 cooking oil to diesel fuel mix. I know it works because he runs his big Ford 4x4 truck with it! That makes his at pump price about $2.00/gal. or less!!
I bet you could go an easy 9 hours on a diesel with a five gallon tank. Probably longer. My 32 HP tractor runs forever on 6 gallons. Fuel price and consumption in a 6x6 is very low when compared to most cars, trucks, airplanes, and our helios burn 100 gallons an hour wether there on the ground or slinging a buckett of water.
My question and scare would be the asking price for the engine. It would be great to have a diesel in a MaxIV. Can you say torque baby.

You can use Furnace oil and you do not need to mix it with diesel but the filters need to be changed often
Why do we waste tax money on bridges and roads when we can all just drive AATVs
furnace oil around me in maine is 3.75 per gallon. Not much less than deisel. The vegie oil works from what I hear unless there are 2 or 3 others in your area that use it, then it becomes a competition to see who gets the used oil. Not sure if it would save in the long run for a vehicle. Just my thoughts
there is a lot of work to do the veggie, new or used, oil right.....
it needs to be hot before it goes to the engine, filtered, and, you start and stop on regular diesel, otherwise, when everything cools, it thickens and or soldifies in the I.P.
There is a lot of good info out there on this issue. It's workable, just takes a fair amount of effort and attention to detail.
Diesel gets better economy, apples to apples, though.
no ignition system, "alternate" fuel capability, lower/less toxic emmisions, etc.
All my vehicles, that I can manage, are diesel.
I'd sure like my AATV to be......But, the price of a small diesel engine is as much as the AATV.....dang.......

As mentioned, diesel has 2 bid advantages - fuel economy and NO ELECTRICAL SYSTEM to get wet. Big upsides for ATTV's. Slower off the start in most cases, although better torque for pulling and heading up hills. Plus then there is the safety factor. I have an old Landrover and a buddy of ours was idling his diesel rover on fall night to warm it up. We were chatting about 50' away when someone says "Hey Bob, your trucks on fire". Sure enough there were flames coming out from under the hood. We rushed over with the ashtray sand (Bob didn't have a fire extinguisher in his truck) and doused the flames. The fuel return line had gotten melted by some Lucas wiring and the fuel caught fire on a short. The 2 things I will always remember about that night is that Bob's truck didn't just explode (low flash point of diesel), and that the truck kept running through all of this. It's a great campfire story we tell at rover events every year now.
