Your welcome CBass. A guy could still have a pull start set up utilizing the pulley on the stub shaft and some rope. You could cut a notch into the outside edge of the stub shaft pulley big enough to slide a knotted end of rope into then wrap around pulley a couple times and pull. Of course you would have to loosen your alternator and slide the belt off but at least you would still have a pull start back up. I also think a pulley with notch machined or cut into it can be obtained?

Thank you so very much AKRanger72 and to all the replys with all the great ideas that you folks have given me. I just now have to decide which way I am going to go with. I love fabbing things out of metal and my welder but I sometime like to take the easy way also. Which ever way I go I will make sure you all will see the pics that I will post when I am finished with the project. Thank you again to all of you folks and may God Bless you all!.

These are some great pic of your setup you installed in your machine,But I do have one question for you or the folks out here, and that is if you are putting in these after market alternators, does it going to matter which direction the pulley will be rotating(Clockwise or Counter clockwise) and if the engine is in the same direction of rotation?. I hope I am not being disturbing or irritating to You folks out here, but if I am please except my sincere appoligys for all my questions.

Here is a link to the alternators I purchased and installed. DB Electrical - NEW CHEVY MINI ALTERNATOR DENSO STREET ROD RACE 1-WIRE 12180 and was told CCW or (counter clockwise Rotation). I have read that these can rotate either direction but I'm not sure on that? So I installed them to rotate CCW and it worked out good as far as room and clearance of the alternator and they were charging great as I tested all of them.

Did HDI Argo last week same alternator runs CCW facing the pulley, same as AKrangers setup.

I bought my alternators off ebay for about $75 minus shipping. A 35amp is plenty but you could go up to whatever amperage you want. I went with denso because they are so small about 5 lbs or so and just one wire to your battery. I didn't ever take detailed pics of my installs sorry but here are a couple pics.
I'm thinking of doing this with my Kubota and also retaining the stock dynamo for charging with a seperate battery for each system, one is basic starting only or duals if I switch it on for more CCA as it is a diesel. Uncertain but ya those lil alternators are sweet and more n likely 35 amp ok unless you want to be bold, add a 100 amp for a inverter to use on trail or at a cabin...for doing repairs etc maybe an idea to have a 1500 watt inverter onboard too...SOrry for thread hack!

Yep, the inverter and runnin' power tools is what I have done. that's why I ran the locked throttle control. Not sayin' ya need the 100 amps but it nice to have if there's room for the case.

I just thought I would join in and show how I installed a marine alternator on my 1990 Argo Magnum with a 18hp kohler.
The flywheel has the old style pulley with two notches for wrapping a rope around for the pull start if needed, so it was an easy install.
The alternator is 72 amp with a one wire hookup and can be spun in either direction.
If anybody is close to Orillia on I bought it at Scott's Auto & Marine Electric. They also rebuilt my starter the same day I dropped it of.

You can get the stub shaft kit directly from Briggs. For my 980 Hustler with a Vanguard 23hp the briggs part # 841580 was $117 +tax&shipping. What size pulley are u guys using on the stub shaft? I ordered a mini denso 1-wire. JUst need to figure out a mount for it.

Toys4me.. where did you get the mount you bolted on the attex?

Dan67 I used 4" or 4 1/2" pulley from Napa on stub shafts.
