  • Vanguard conversions

    Good morning everyone;
    Is there anyone out here that can tell me if there is a conversion mod kitt that will increase my 18hp vanguard from 18hp to 23hp. I seem to remember reading that by changing out some internal parts and rejeting the carb that it is possible. Can someone tell me if it is possible? Thank you so much to all of you folks out here for educating us not so educated folks on how we can enjoy our machines better. I am so glad to be a member of such a wonderful group of people and look forward to meeting most of you at some of the rally's that are held in and around the Michigan area.

To clarify without stepping on swifts toes,...... perfromance v-twins sells parts to bump up the horse power of your machine. very easy people to work with. The 18 and 23 hp engines use different blocks all together so techinically to answer your question. no you cannot just change internal parts to make it a 23 hp engine. But you can put parts into your engine provided by performance v-twins that could in reality give you even more than 23hp. Hope this makes sense.

        Also, you can get a 20HP Vanguard carburetor ad linkage (2 barrel), intake manifold, and air cleaner housing and bolt it on your 18HP Vanguard for some easy bolt on HP. The 18-20HP Vanguards are both 570cc displacement. The 21-23 are 627cc and like surferdude said, parts aren't interchangeable from the 18/20 to the 21/23 Vanguards. Read through this thread for some more help on the subject:

        Or you could just get a Bandolero Briggs Vanguard engine, which is a 20HP built to rev higher and push 30HP right out of the box.

              Well thank you all for the wonderful information, and I will be sure to go to the web sites that you shared with me and I hope by fall I will have the ponys that my little mule (that's the name I have for my MaxIV) are looking to run with. When I start my rebuild I will be sure to take lots of photos to share with you all. Thanks again guys

                  No wonder the parts that my local wood chop shop sold me did not fit! Part# are not the same.
