  • Fuel starvation on hills. Electric pump?

    Hello Everyone,

I've got a 1997 Bigfoot that seems to have a fuel starvation problem only going up forwards on steep inclines. It did it with my single barrel stock setup and it still does it with my new 2-barrel setup, otherwise it runs perfectly.
I took off the pulse pump and cleaned it, new filter and lines, cleared tank intake etc, no change. I believe the pump can't push enough fuel when needed.

I'm thinking of a low psi electric pump, but don't want to burn down my Argo. Has any one figured out how to wire in an electric pump that will shut off if the engine stalls?(Not just if the ignition key is turned off) Larger engines use an oil pressure relay, but this would be tough to adapt to work on a small Briggs 18HP.

Thanks for any and all suggestions.

    hi
Sounds like u have done every thing u can
Have u tried raising the float level a 1/16 at a time ,can make a huge difference .

In regards to the engine, the vanguard engines have poor ring seal ,this causes the engines to suck less and less fuel over there life span of the engine .This causes flat spot under acceleration or any compromised situation .

The vannys are stationaryengines and are not perfectly suited to offroad 6x6 .They r not made for accelerating . An accelerator pump carby is an ideal solution

The easiest way to check is
1 compression test 130 psi ,cylinders need to be within 10 % of each other
[there is a compression release but the above will give some idea ]
2 cylinder leak down test is basically compressed air in the cylinder and measuring how much escapes .
Poor ring seal will give blow by into sump besides seeing it on a gage u will hear it coming out of the oil filler

In regards to the electric fuel pump Facet make a large selection 2-4 psi units
A safety cut out they may do
The propane auto industry has what u r looking for
either an electrical cut out triggered by a wire that wraps around your plug wire
or a engine vacumn that connects or disconnects power

There are several members that have installed low PSI fuel pumps to help with the starvation issue especially when climbing steep inclines. If you will search the site, there are some part numbers listed and a description of what was done. Here are two threads:

I have my fuel pump wired through an oil pressure switch on my briggs. There is a place to plumb one in on the oil filter housing. The electric fuel pump really made it run well, better idle and more power.
